Just two weeks ago in Silverstone, it had felt like a fever dream — Nico on the podium and Gabriel had been there, front and center, cheering louder than anyone.
Now it was already Sunday in Spa and Nico was… different. Something had shifted, and Nico wasn’t meeting him halfway anymore.
Maybe it was just the weather getting to him. He would blame it on the cold settling in his bones. He has been ignoring his symptoms for the past week as if denial alone could strong-arm him into recovery. So far, it wasn’t working.

It was like they were in perfect definition, and the rest of the scene in soft focus. Dark as night, but sparkling as if filled with galaxies of stars, creased with such happiness as they looked up at Nico, as if in worship at some great altar. The trophy gripped in his hands, the bottle of champagne, yet unpopped at his feet, the step itself on the podium, all of it faded to nothing in those eyes.'Gabi and Nico have been dancing around each other for months, not quite brave enough to make the jump from teammates, to something a little more.
Luckily, Kevin is in attendance at the British Grand Prix, and he is not stupid. Some encouragement from him, a monumental podium, and the ensuing celebration, finally enough to hit the breaking point for the tension that had held the distance between the pair.

And then the morning of the race, when normally he would be discussing final preparations with Nico during the drivers’ parade, Nico spent the entire event with George.
Of course, Nico was friendly with many of the other drivers. And Gabi didn’t… own his German teammate. But to be relegated back with the other rookies while he could hear Nico’s laughter intermittently across the platform, Gabi felt insulted. George didn’t have their problems. Gabi barely even spoke to Kimi anymore because of it, they were just facing completely different challenges in their first years. What could George bloody Russell have to say that was so fucking funny?

Sometimes, it is not just the physical features that spell out their age difference, it’s the way Gabriel looks at him. Directly and brightly, hanging onto every word. Hope and adoration bleeding from all sides. He’s so busy looking up at Nico, it’s as if he doesn’t notice himself scrunching down to make himself smaller. Like he thinks he can’t measure up to him.
“Gabriela.”
He flushes at the nickname and his shoulders relax, imperceptibly. Nico wouldn’t call him that, if he were truly angry. Would never desecrate it, wouldn’t lead it to ruin. And so he’s not mad, not anymore.

“I wonder if my hotel room is as nice as yours?”
Fuck. Gabi felt his knees weaken at that, Nico’s near-sultry voice making a German accent far more seductive than Gabi thought was possible, his eyes shining with mischief, intrigue, a confidence Gabi wished he could have himself. “I guess there’s only one way to find out?” His reply was no where near as measured as he would’ve wanted, no where near as calm, hearing his own voice shudder slightly. He would’ve challenged anyone else to be calm faced with what he was faced with in that moment.
“I guess so,” Nico replied, a smirk pulling across his lips, making Gabi’s eyes dart to them, the memories of the soul-raking kiss tumbling through his mind as he looked. He needed to feel that again. And more. So much more. “I’ll wait for you there.”
They shared one kiss after Silverstone. Now Gabi needs more. What better excuse, than to celebrate his best F1 career finish, and first Driver of the Day?
