The backdoor arcs open, slamming against the wall.
There’s a moment where Rumi stands there, huddled to the ground and blinded by the lights from inside, while Mira, haloed in white, stands with one hand on the door and one hand on her rifle. Rumi can barely see the way her brow pinches, perplexed, but she easily sees the barrel lifting.
Rumi whines miserably and scrambles back. Her eyes screw shut, heart pounding in her throat.
Not a threat. Not a threat. Not a threat. She just prays her pathetic state conveys that.

Summary
Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.

“It’s not, Rumi. If it’s hurting you, it’s not fine.” Mira says it like it’s easy. Like they’re not balancing on a wire pulled taut above utter destruction of themselves.
All ‘cause of Rumi.
“You’re shaking,” Zoey whispers. Chin propped up against Rumi’s shoulder.
“Maybe I’m nervous.”
“Of us?”
The air punches out of Rumi’s lungs. No, she wants to say. Wants to mean it. Except her patterns glow in the same way Mira’s gok-do had against Zoey’s cheeks.
