But it couldn’t last. As his body recovered, his mind began to remember everything that had happened to it.

Glass falls around him like a rainstorm, and for a moment, John Carter has to wonder if he was struck by lightning. It’s would certainly make sense for how much his entire, well, everything hurt. The back of his head was wet. It could have been rain, but when John moves his head, he notices a distinct sticky quality to the liquid his head is laying in.

Summary
Sequel to my fic Being a Superhero, but it can be read alone.
The speech was rather dry. Alfred knows that these Wayne Enterprise events aren’t Dick’s favorite activity in the world, and he would agree with him that they are exceedingly boring to sit through, although Alfred was much better at holding his tongue than any other member of the family. Still, Dick usually finds a way to sneak some of his natural charism and humor into the few speeches that he gives when Batman must leave for League business.
Despite it all, Dick does a fantastic job. He knows how to carry a message and hold himself in front of a crowd. Alfred can’t help but feel proud of the man he’s become.
That’s when he hears the bullet.

Buck had spent all his energy on a shift full of difficult and long calls, leaving him drained. Leaving the whole crew exhausted, craving for home, for the warmth of company of their family. Most of them were in the showers or already getting dressed to leave.

"Not exactly." Bruce paused for a minute, as if rehearsing something in his mind. "It's like your yo-yo. When you play with it, it goes up and down, right? It's kind of like that, except the yo-yo gets longer as the years go by. At first the yo-yo comes up a lot. But as time goes on you let the yo-yo down for a longer time, and it doesn't hit you as often. The yo-yo will still hit you, and it will still hurt, but it won't be so constant. It will get easier."
"With my yo-yo, I can stop bouncing it," Dick said. "But for this, there's no way to stop the bounce?"
"No," Bruce said. "There's no way to stop the bounce."
Dick was alright, until (unless) he wasn't.
