“Do trees dream?” Hob asks one evening. They are standing in front of the New Inn, a rare occurrence. Usually, after their meetings, Dream disappears in a whirl of sand, only to turn up a few months later unannounced.
Today, he had deigned to follow Hob out. Warmth blooms in Hob’s chest as he rearranges his messenger bag on his shoulder. For someone like Dream, as private as he is, these few extra minutes on the sidewalk feel intimate.
Dream holds a fanned leaf between his forefinger and thumb. He twirls it once, twice, his pale fingers mesmerizing.
“Yes,” Dream says. “In a manner of speaking.”
