Summary
Kaveh and Alhaitham's holiday in Mondstadt takes a turn for the romantic.
Venti’s giggle belies the serious curiosity of his question. “You're in love with him, right?” he asks, innocently twirling a braid around his finger and acting for all the world as if those words won't have a profound effect on Kaveh.
“Uhhhh??” is all Kaveh can think to say as reality slams back in. The cold seems to soak his very bones, making him shiver despite all the layers, as his heart screeches to a halt. “W-what makes you say that?” He stumbles over his words as well as over his own feet, a surprisingly strong arm reaching out to steady him. He mumbles his thanks.
“You look at him like he hung the very moon,” Venti says, “and your bickering is quite unlike anything else. And don’t think I didn't notice you two playing footsie at the bar.”
“That was—he was just trying to annoy me!” Kaveh argues. “And it worked, by the way, it always works because he's the most annoying man in Teyvat and I can't stand him and I most certainly am not—” he cuts a glance to either side, making sure no one is listening in, and lowers his voice to a hiss “—in love with him!”

“You're awfully quiet for once,” Alhaitham points out, unnecessarily in Kaveh's opinion.
“Have you ever tried thinking before you speak?” Kaveh snips, prepared even first thing in the morning for a round of quipping.
“I have, plenty of times. I shouldn't bother. Have you?” Alhaitham counters smoothly.
It’s been five days since Alhaitham said what he said, and Kaveh has done his damnedest to clear his mind, to no avail. Have you really even liked a single girl you've dated? bounces between each corner of his mind, a cursed echo. It's not that he has anything against the ones who aren't transphobic, really, so most of them are nice, it's just… Where's the passion he reads about in the occasional, self-indulgent romance novel? Is it even real and possible, or is it confined to the realm of fiction?
With a heart as big as Kaveh's, it's only a matter of time before he finds the right girl and falls in love, right? Right!
Or not. Things don't exactly go to plan (especially with Alhaitham planting ideas in his head), but the love he does find is all he's ever wanted.

“Yeah, okay, so our friends have been betting on when we’re getting together. And we decided to trick them. Well, Thomas decided to trick them. We had Chuck place a bet, we’re gonna pretend to be in a relationship.”
The choked sound his sister made had him wincing. He was sort of glad, sort of disappointed that she agreed with him that this was a terrible idea. She went into a longer rant about him getting his heart broken and her having to come home and pick him up off the floor when their parents failed, and he laughed softly. “I know, okay? I know it’s a terrible idea, but I can’t say no to him. The thing is, I need to know what to wear tonight.”
Naya groaned on the line, and he totally got her. He was being an idiot and he knew it. “I’m sorry okay! I’m bloody sorry, but I need the bloody buggers to believe that I’m trying to impress him.”
Naya snorted again. “Which you’re clearly not.”
“Exactly.” Another groan. “Okay maybe a little.”
