In the months following the pandemic, Dr. Reid has ingratiated himself to Priwen by occasionally offering his medical services free of charge at their base of operations.
But on his most well-received house call yet, his blood cravings flare up unexpectedly, forcing him to cut his visit short—when he is waylaid by McCullum for a social call, and an already-delicate situation quickly becomes perilous.

Summary
Whenever soulmarks were the topic of conversation, Artemy was laughed at. He understood why – most people had something totally benign like 'how can I help you today' or 'can you tell me how to get to the library', which were totally normal things to be the first thing you said to a stranger.
The first words Artemy’s soulmate was destined to say to him, on the other hand, left a lot to be desired.

Summary
Doctor Reid is walking home from work in the early hours of the morning when he sees his life-long friend Clarence Crossley. The man has been terrified of vampires since his return from the war. The good Doctor suggests they go for a walk seeing as they both seem to need the distraction. They come across an 'abandoned' tenement that the former soldier insists the pair check out.
Knowing the other man won't be swayed all Reid can do is follow his friend, when your best friend has a stupid idea, you can't let them go alone.

“...What’s your name then, eastern transplant?” the young man asked when Artemy could taste smoke.
“Artemy,” he answered, earning raised eyebrows for his honesty. The young man seemed surprised by the response to his own question. Instead of pulling out his own cigarette, he reclaimed the one Artemy had chosen to take a drag himself. There were plenty in his pack before, though, weren’t there?
“Artemy… My, my… That’s your real name, isn’t it?”
“…Should it not be?” he asked.
The other young man was still smiling at him though and offering him back the cigarette still to share.
“No. I rather think it should be,” he answered. “Audentes fortuna iuvat… Just for that, you can call me Daniil.”

Jonathan hesitates, but Geoffrey's ultimatum is evidently a persuasive one, because despite Jonathan's obvious discomfort he nevertheless attempts to explain: "Chemically speaking, saliva has many of the same components as blood. To put a finer point on it, the salivary gland... sieves the blood, and holds back the red blood cells..."
Geoffrey absorbs this in silence.
"... So yes, technically it is 'a blood thing'."
