He never dreamed of ending up anywhere else. His dreams had always been contained to Hawkins city limits. It never occurred to him that he could end up somewhere else. That he maybe would want to end up somewhere else.

During a depressive episode, Dan starts thinking about how strange it is that water is necessary for human survival, but can also be deadly in so many ways (waterborne illnesses, flooding, accidental drownings, etc.). The more he thinks about this, the more his mental and physical health start to deteriorate. Phil doesn't understand Dan's obsession with water at first. By the time he realizes what's going on, damage has already been done.

Robin approaches him slowly. She sees herself in the mirror: still dirt-smudged with bags under her eyes and dried blood obscuring her freckles. She rests her hand on Steve’s back and feels the rattle of his breath under the vest he still hasn’t taken off.
“It’s okay, Steve.”
He jerks his head up. His eyes are red-rimmed and shining. She slides her left hand all the way around his side until she’s hugging him from behind. She presses her cheek to the denim covering his back and closes her eyes.
“It’s okay, dingus. You can let it out,” she murmurs. She rubs her face against his back and slides her hand down the bare skin of his arm. “It’s just me. You don’t have to pretend you’re okay.”
Or: Steve has a tell for when he’s trying not to cry and Robin seems to be the only one who notices it.

Mr. Terrific assured Lois in no uncertain terms that Clark was going to survive. That his healing was well underway, that the feverish confusion was normal, that with rest and relaxation, he would be fine.
But that was an hour ago. That was Clark-who-couldn’t-stand-up, sure, but he was still aware. Since then, his speech has deteriorated to confused muttering and his head has started lolling over like he can’t focus enough to keep it straight.
Lois glances over her shoulder again—never mind that she’s hurtling a hundred miles an hour through the air—she needs to see for herself that Clark is still alive. His swollen eyes are drifting shut again.
She just doesn’t believe he’s supposed to look like this.
