Summary
From then on, it becomes a thing.
When they have a rough call, they sit in the back of the engine and Eddie traces the easiest words he can think of, desperate to make Buck laugh again. When Buck wakes up on Eddie’s couch shaking out of his skin and calling Christopher’s name, Eddie traces safe, safe, safe, through the soft fabric of Buck’s sleep shirt until his hands stop shaking. When Buck’s knee bounces anxiously next to his on the couch at the station, their phone ringers on and volume up so they don’t miss any updates about Maddie and the baby, Eddie traces the worst baby names he can come up with.
-
Or, Eddie traces words on Buck's back to calm him down, but Buck will never guess what he traces in Spanish, right?

Summary
“I’m serious,” Buck says, his tone reflecting his sentiment. “I want to marry you.”
Eddie arches an eyebrow at him. “You want to marry me?”
Buck gives him a dopey smile. “I do.” He pauses, then asks, “Do you want to marry me?”
Eddie thinks for a moment. He thinks really hard, and the panic starts to set in. That panic he got with Ana, that panic he got when Marisol moved in. He can’t marry Buck. It would ruin everything. He would ruin everything.
“No,” Eddie answers.

"'I just need you to take a step back, just for a little bit. It’s not permanent; it’s just until Ana and I can get our feet under us, you know?” Eddie’s eyes were worried but his smile was hopeful. Buck felt sick.
Eddie wanted him to step back, to leave. He was around too much; in their space too much; in their lives too much; always too much. God, Buck really must have exhausted them until Eddie had had enough; he couldn’t tolerate Buck anymore. Buck had to hand it to him; he’d lasted longer than anyone, besides Maddie. Maybe he should tell him that. The last man standing, finally bowing in defeat."

"You have no idea what you deserve. You’re terrible at judging."
"Who else," Eddie says, tiredly. "Who else will do it."
"Me," Buck says.
Self-denial won't save you, but there are other solutions out there.

“You’re bi?” Adriana gasps. Because, for all the things Eddie drunkenly told her about Buck last night, that little nugget of information had not been included. “Wow,” she breathes. “Wow, wow, wow. That’s - - sorry, that’s great. Isn’t that great, Eddie?”
Eddie, who had confessed his giant gay crush to her like it was a terminal diagnosis, kicks her under the table. “Sure is.”
Or, Adriana is in town for New Year's, and it's the best decision of her gossip-loving life.

He narrows his eyes at the sight of Eddie having a rather friendly conversation with someone. He was talking to a firefighter from the 133. The firefighter was a guy. A male firefighter, by the way.
Or: Eddie has a

Summary
“Eddie, you can go home.” Buck says with a sigh, rubbing a hand down is face.
Eddie tenses, putting down the shirt he was folding. “What?”
“You don’t have to do… this,” he gestures around him.
“I want to do this, Buck.”
Again, he has to fight the urge to kick and yell and have a tantrum because Eddie might be saying what he wants to here but he’s also staring off to the side of Buck’s head, like he doesn’t even exist and it’s disorientating. “No, you don’t.”
***
Or, Buck is spiralling - has been spiralling for a while now, and he's pretty sure if he doesn't say something soon he's going to explode, but the one person he needs to talk to won't even look at him, and it's breaking him apart.

Summary
For a moment, Eddie is quiet.
He stares. Blinks. Stares some more, his mouth opening and closing around nothing.
And then all at once, he zeroes in on the photo collage across the room, and his body goes completely still.
They’re all couples. Happy, blissful, newly married couples, still in their suits and long white dresses, holding each other close beneath the familiar branches of a willow tree. The same branches billowing in the wind outside Eddie’s bedroom window.
A wedding venue. He woke up in a wedding venue.
His wedding venue.
or: Eddie wakes up on the morning of his and Buck’s wedding. Except, Eddie is straight, and him and Buck aren’t together.

“Is everything OK up here?” Buck hears Eddie’s voice so he stands, pivoting quickly and watching as Eddie quickens his pace. “Jesus, Buck. I leave you alone for a few hours and you –”
Sneeze. Sneeze.
“Motherfucker –” Buck covers his mouth and nose as he’s assaulted with too many more sneezes to count, nearly falling over with the last one of the spree nearly a full minute later. “Kill me. Somebody kill me.” He can’t believe he jinxed himself. At least it wasn’t a nosebleed?
“What’s going on?” Eddie asks his question a different way and spins around a few times, but Buck watches everyone shrug.
“Eddie, I think I’m cursed,” Buck whines desperately and falls back down onto the couch.

Or,
The one where Buck somehow jinxes himself into sneezing, and Ravi suggests a resolution: Eddie should kiss Buck. -

Eddie should have said no. Eddie should have said, I’m fine, I can handle rain, I’ve handled worse, because that was what he always did. He didn’t make choices that felt selfish, especially not for something soft like… this.
This new thing between them that still felt like a secret he carried under his skin, warm and bright. Instead, Eddie heard himself say, “Hen’s not going.”
Buck’s eyes went wide with triumph.
“See?” he whispered dramatically, like they were in on a conspiracy. “Hen said cuddle day.”
“That’s not what she—”
OR Buck just wants to cuddle with his new boyfriend.

“He didn’t even tip me after,” Eddie groaned, his voice strained, and he sounded out of breath with the way he kept working himself on Buck’s cock. “Not even a dollar. Fuckin- fuck- rude. How’re you gonna bitch at me and then not tip?”
“Bastard,” Buck gasped and bucked his hips up to meet Eddie’s slam down.
“Like not even a thank you?” Eddie huffed and he paused his bouncing just for a moment so he could catch his breath, and filthily grind down onto Buck just so his cock was relentlessly rubbing his prostate.
“Thank you,” Buck said as his eyes fluttered.
Eddie talks a lot during sex. Buck kind of loves it.

He’s pushed back against a brick wall, it’s so cold it makes his backside feel wet. Eddie slots his knee between Buck’s legs, hand coming up to rest underneath Buck’s Adam's apple. The way his breath hitches at the touch only makes him burn with desire more.
“Is this the attention you wanted?” Eddie snarls, mouth meeting the chunk of meat on Buck’s shoulder.
or, Buck and Eddie go out, things escalate.

“I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore,” Buck blurted out.
It took Eddie a moment to remember where he was after that. He felt like he had just been hit by a freight train sending him toppling over a rocky cliff into the ocean below as he stared blankly at his boy- no, his ex-boyfriend now apparently.
“You-” Eddie’s voice came out small and choked. “You what?”
“I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore,” Buck repeated.
Or the misunderstandings proposal fic that no one asked for.

Summary
Buck is going to break up with Eddie.
Now, Buck hasn’t told Eddie this, nor has anyone else, actually, but Eddie is positive Buck is somewhere planning his quick escape. He’s probably pawning off Eddie’s St. Christopher medallion as we speak.
Or at least he would be if it wasn’t currently around Eddie’s neck. And even if Buck is planning on breaking up with him, he would never be that cruel, so maybe Buck isn’t actually doing that but he’s probably doing something similar that will lead to Eddie being heartbroken and single only two years shy of potentially being an empty nester.
The point is, something is going on with Buck, and Eddie is sure that he’s about to be dumped.Or, Buck is distant, Eddie spirals, and Maddie and Chris offer half-good advice.

“I’m not saying he is or isn't. I’m asking how this attachment affects you. If you think it doesn't affect you, then that's how you feel. But—” He paused, taking a sharp breath in. It felt like he was trying to work himself up to a conversation he'd been wanting to have for a while, but Buck didn’t understand what he was trying to say. “Every session, you talk about him. You don’t only talk about him, I’ll give you that, but we’ve been here for forty-five minutes, and you’ve talked about him for thirty-seven of those minutes.”
Buck sank in his chair. “Are you trying to make fun of me?”
“Definitely not,” he assured. “You told me Eddie made two mugs of coffee this morning. You talked about that for thirteen minutes.”
Here’s the thing: Buck really loves Eddie.

“So Buck,” Hen took the warning look as an invitation, “Who are you kissing at midnight?”
Eddie choked on his drink, a few coughs spluttering out. Buck thumped his fist on Eddie’s back without thinking, leaving his hand there to rub soothing circles into his friend's back as Eddie caught his breath.
Eddie glared at Hen.
Buck looked between the two with suspicion before turning to Hen, letting his hand fall back to his lap, “No one I guess,” he shrugged, and then because he hates himself, “ since I can’t kiss the person I want to.”
It was the wrong thing to say.
Hen and Karen both straightened, their eyes widening in sync as they both leaned forward with interest. Eddie had gone still beside him, his body completely tense as he looked at Buck with wide eyes.
“Oh, do tell?” Karen pounced first.
Buck stammered and panicked, “Woah I mean-“
“Yeah Buck,” Hen grinned, “Who do you want to kiss at midnight?”
•••
Bucks a little sad that everyone has someone to kiss at midnight except him, even Eddie! Not that Eddie will tell him who it is he’s planning on smooching at the bells.

Summary
The second the words leave his mouth, Eddie wishes he could claw them back in. Reach out into the space between them—that chasm of distance that’s been building over the last several weeks. They’re twenty feet apart in literal terms, Buck’s sitting at the table and Eddie’s at the top of the stairs, clutching his hands in front of himself, but the entire world is separating them because—
Because.
Fuck.
He takes a step towards him, the rest of the firehouse falling silent as they all turn to look at him. That easy smile that was on Buck’s lips, that soft hope that lined his statement fading into obscurity as Eddie’s words ring vibrant and angry over it all.
Buck blinks, tilting his head like he doesn’t quite understand, and how could he? How could he understand? He never fucking gets it.

Or Buck wants to start a family, but he already has one.

Summary
In hindsight, Eddie knows the argument is his fault. He knows that he instigated it, he knows that Buck didn't even do anything wrong. He knows that because he'd woken up in a bad mood, that seeing Buck just narrowly escape death again had sent him crashing over that edge from anxious to angry.
He knows—He knows, but when Buck turns his back on him, borderline shaking, and says, "I think it's best if you leave. I don't really want to be around you right now," it hits him like a punch to the gut.
(Or, Eddie thinks he's lost his boyfriend.)
