“Imogen?” Laudna ducked under the cloth flap and into the large tent, Imogen’s name a broken pant in her lungs. “Imogen? Darling?”
Imogen, wet hair cascading down her back and shoulders in dark lavender waves, stood facing the corner of the room away from Laudna, naked and unnaturally still. Her hands were raised out in front of her, palms up and head lowered.
In the lantern light with Imogen’s bare skin exposed, her lightning marks and freckles almost glowed, but—
Laudna’s heart stuttered.
The scars mapped along her flesh were brutal, and for the first time, extremely visible.
...Trauma leaves scars. Love is healing.

In this new silence, Vi’s eyes trace Cait’s body. She starts at her face, radiant in the sunlight, then rolls over her neck, over her bare chest, down her abdomen. It’s kind of amazing the way Cait almost commands the light to fall on her. Her gaze catches on every scratch and gash and bruise on her body, and, impulsively, she reaches out and brushes her fingers over each blemish. Even bloodied and battered, she somehow has a way of stealing the beauty from the room.
She has the look of a warrior.
