Summary
Hobie dies when Theo is thirty-five — two years sober from drugs, five years sober from alcohol, and a subjective number of years in recovery from the rest of his life. In his will, Hobie leaves him a letter, the shop, the workshop and the house. Pippa gets a chest of Hobie's old clothes she clutches to her chest and doesn't let go of for a long time. Popper gets a casserole smoothie of all the condolences Theo receives in the coming days.
Life goes on, and Theo tries to go on with it, despite the odds. Boris comes and goes with the tides of the Moon, and like the Moon, Theo's love for him is ever-present, even when he doesn't see it.

Theo moves to Vegas, and meeting Boris there will become the first step toward his decade-long problem of drug abuse and art theft. But he couldn't help but remember him fondly, regardless, because of the unlikely bond they had shared that Theo could not obtain with anyone else, no matter how much he tried. When Theo's father dies, being on the run with him will cement that bond even further while they're forced to share four walls in a dirty motel room and live off whatever food scraps they can find, and try to make ends meet together. Theo abandons him when he grows sick of waiting for a promise of a better life that Boris was unable to provide for them, and they go their separate ways without knowing of one another for 12 whole years. When all is mended with the painting, post canon Theo tries his best to navigate life with the terrible coping mechanisms he has relied on over the years, and loneliness after calling off his engagement with Kitsey. The more Boris watched them—over the days they came there, it happened at least once every two weeks, he watched the man grow less and less interested in her, in what she had to say. The smiles were less frequent, he’d leave her to dance alone (or even with other people) which eventually surprised Boris. And apparently, his surprise arrived to the young man, standing further away close to the bar, while Boris was sitting at a table against the wall, and he looked at him. His eyes didn’t tell Boris much, other than… an eyebrow raise. Maybe he was asking Boris why he was staring at him like he was the only man ever, but Boris liked to think that it was more like a tempting look than anything. So he smiled. Not big, slow, slow enough for him to see it. He knew he did when he got a smile back—more gentle than Boris, but still tentative.

Theo didn’t fly home right away; he stayed in Antwerp and together, he and Boris flew back to New York. They start over, two troubled teenagers all over again. They’ve replaced scorching Vegas summers with chilling New York winters. It was never about the place anyway.
They’re together-- they’re something-- but Theo still struggles to be open to strangers passing by.(PLUS an extended part two/epilogue to give us more comforting boyfriends and less internalized homophobia for Theo!)

Until Theo finally decides to demand clarity.
AKA: My self-indulgent story about Theo and Boris trying to start a life together, still navigating the fucked up reality they are in, as in their trauma, their love for each other and the constant reminders that it could all fall apart any time. Overall, if you ever believed in a possibility of a happy end for these two, despite everything (or in spite it), welcome. I hope this heals a part of you.
AKA: Love can't save you, but it sure matters that it's there.
General content warning for detoxing (and everything that might happen through it and after it), past addiction, sobriety struggle, relationship struggles, emotional constipation and overall mindset of Theodore Decker, through whose point of view this story gets told.
Also, the title is a James Bond reference, and you'll see why.

It was a good day. Things, for once, were going quite well, though not according to plan. That was alright, as mentioned, it was a good day.
Boris took the stairs. Carpeted with a low, grey pile, each step he climbed was filled with a long forgotten buoyancy that bubbled up through his chest, drawing an impossibly wide smile up through his throat and across his lips. These old hotels had tiny lifts which traveled slower than his practically bouncing feet could carry him. He didn’t mind the three flights he had to ascend, he would make quick work of them— he had waited ten years and he was done waiting.
There was a pressure in his chest that felt the very opposite of dying, but like the emptiness inside him had faded. There was a weight lifted from his mind and a lightness that hadn’t been there in far too long—
Was this what being happy felt like? Could this be joy?

Boris bounded forward like an over-excited golden retriever, coffee forgotten. Theo was on his feet already and met him halfway, throwing his arms around his friend without hesitating. That was even more satisfying, feeling Boris freeze with shock, because Theo hadn’t initiated any physical contact between them without the comfort of darkness or drugs in, well, ever. It lasted less than a second before Theo felt the air being squeezed from his lungs in the best way. He held onto it, held onto Boris, for perhaps a few seconds longer than was socially acceptable. He didn’t care, just grinned into the knit hat.

It works when he wakes Will like this, with gentle hands and words, telling him he’s safe. It works when he climbs into Will’s warm bed, turning him on his side and curling up against his back, an arm over his waist and his cheek pressed against his shoulder. They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.
or: Will has nightmares and Mike is the only one who can console him. Not even Will's boyfriend can. Mike takes great pride in this fact.
