Hiring a member of the Zoldyck family costed fortunes, Illumi was no exception. Despite the price though, he had always had clients and missions to fulfill.
As he was looking through his requests during the night, one in particular stood out. It was from the infamous Phantom Troupe leader. He needed assistance getting rid of the swarms of guards protecting the governor's home throughout the cities yearly gala, it is believed that there are oceans of old valuable artifacts stored in the estate. Obviously peaking the leaders interest.
Accepting the mission, Illumi remembered something Hisoka had mentioned to him a week before about his interest in killing Chrollo and how he had just gotten the perfect opportunity. At first he payed no attention to it, but at further evaluation of the magicians skills, he could most definitely end up killing his client. He had to prevent that, no matter what.

And if he did ask that, he would add that maybe they both had a dream where the worst parts of themselves got released into the wild and changed their own cores. And that maybe the reason why he feels such a strong annoyance towards him is because they tried to kill each other, in that dream.
