Summary
In the fall of 1953, Eugene sends an ad to the San Francisco Chronicle. It reads:
Professional single male, late 20s, located in Dogpatch. Clean, considerate & responsible, seeking similar. Pets O.K. Smoking O.K. First month + security up front. Contact Eugene for details. Serious enquiries only.
Eugene is freshly divorced and outgrowing the life he had painstakingly made for himself after returning from war. Merriell is grieving, aimless, roaming the length of the Pacific coast looking for a place to collect himself. The first time they speak, Eugene is suffering a late summer nosebleed. Merriell had just pawned his mother's earrings for first month's rent. He moves in the same day.
feat. splinters, workwear, payphone calls, cruising. the delicate hot-house flower that is merriell. eugene at his most neurotic. sea fog & starlings & improbably hot first time sex. the inherent insanity of falling for your landlord.

Summary
Three hundred years ago – with the birth of this isola – a countdown began. Slowly ticking. An hourglass with sand borrowed from a future that will never exist. Like a tear through time, a hole to compensate for all that is not supposed to be here yet.
The problem does not lie within the silence of the church. It lies within us.
Human consciousness.
Maybe the presence of a simple priest is what’s holding the world together. The low whisper of continuous prayer like bolts in the substance of humanity.
--
Jean Vicquemare is a dolorian priest in Martinaise, battling with unwanted desires while simultaneously dealing with the porch collapse at his literal doorstep. Harry bumps right into Jean's carefully balanced temperance with the grace of a drunk bumblebee.

Summary
SOLA, THE ANTI-INNOCENCE - Her silver, disco-dancer jumpsuit glints blindingly. “I know you resent me, for keeping what I know from you. To be the anti-innocence isn’t *flattery* from the masses.” Her smile is slight and wry, thin lipped. “Oh, I’m sure you wish I were your Dolores Dei, sweetheart. Your past and your future, to open the pale to Elysium. Sing the magpie song. But I wasn’t, and we both knew I would never be. The future wasn’t mine to give.”
LEVERAGE - This is it. She’s done: speech over, rule over, game over. The people are held captive by the crinkle at the corners of her eyes and the sharp cut of blond hair against her thin back, the humanity behind her distance. They couldn’t protest to her resignation if they *tried.*
PARAPHRENIA [Godly: Success] - You know, I don't think Sola was blond.

Summary
The necklace breaks him out of the memory: Why are you here?, it asks. He is startled - he hadn’t expected the artefacts here to speak to him directly. “I’m here for you,” he replies, “to look at you and remember you and love you.” You don’t love me, the necklace replies, and Harry protests. You’re a communist and you think I’m fundamentally a distasteful relic from an exploitative colonial regime. She loved me, and you’re here because you still love her.
Off-duty, Kim takes Harry for an afternoon at the museum. Harry searches for part of himself.

Summary
He’s sweet, sometimes. He brings Tommy tea, somehow knowing that his nerves can’t handle coffee. He brings him lyrics from a dream. He brings him maybells crushed into books of poetry stolen from the bookstore. He brings him stories of Ruby that the wind told him.
He brings and brings and brings. Like a dog with nowhere to go.

Summary
Stewy reaches out and traces the bruise on Kendall’s back, fingers gentle. Kendall doesn’t move. He could be asleep for all Stewy knew.
But he’s not, so when Stewy says, “It’s okay, Ken,” Kendall turns and wraps his arms around Stewy’s waist again. Buries his head in his shoulder. Exhales when Stewy presses Kendall closer to him.

Summary
His father was toying with him from the start, picking at his own scabs by poking at Kendall’s sensitive flesh and seeing how quickly he would bruise. He wasn’t Orestes—he was Iphigenia. He was the blood sacrifice. Even now, when the world looks to him and sees a son declaring war, Kendall is nothing more than a fucking puppet.

Summary
He’s always within arms reach, Eugene notices, maybe a month into it all. Four lots of crossed out tally marks in Sharpie on his helmet. He chalks it up initially to coincidence, because God knows there’s no place else to be in this whole vast, stinking jungle. They all fetch up against each other by some point in the day besides, flotsam and jetsam of the United States Marine Corps, tossed reckless into the bush with little thought to what they have to do there in the first place besides kill, kill, kill. Shelton, with his smile that is all teeth, shirtless and bony and always, always, by Eugene’s side.

Summary
Written for Sledgefu Week 2020 Day 2: Southern Gothic AU
The bayou feels ancient. Eugene’s breath is stolen by the absolute stillness of it all. The cypress and tupelo trees grow so thick that there’s not a ripple of a breeze in the air. The longer they move across the water, the more exhausted Eugene begins to feel. His head becomes cotton, all thick and light, in the heat of the bayou. He turns his head to the shore again, and he sucks in a short breath when he sees a man lurking in the trees. At first he wonders if it’s Merriell, and then he wonders if he’s going mad.
