Summary
That word never comes, because from one moment to the next, the few droplets of rain turn into a deluge. Arthur struggles with the car as it slips on the slick asphalt.
“Box, box, Arthur. Box, box.” Comes the instruction over the radio, but it’s too late. Arthur can already feel the car slipping out from under his control as he rounds another turn in the track. He already knows what’s coming, but he fights against it for as long as he can all the same. Sure enough, he feels the car slip right off the track.
Everything slows down for a moment as he watches the wall come closer and closer.
And then he impacts.

Arthur finally gets to introduce his new boyfriend to his job, and it doesn’t exactly go to plan.

“Do you ever wonder about the future? What it holds in store for Erebor, the Shire, everyone we know?” The question had been burning at the back of his mind lately. He knew he loved Thorin. He knew he wanted to stay at the dwarf’s side as long as the dwarf would have him. But he often thought about home. Only now, he wasn’t entirely sure where home truly was anymore. The longer he stayed in Erebor, the more his idea of home shifted from one place to another.
Thorin shifts beside him, nearly dislodging Bilbo’s head. In answer, Bilbo moves too, allowing himself to meet those blue eyes he had fallen in love with. “I get the feeling what your question truly is, is what is going to happen to us?”

Thorin and Bilbo take a break from the mountain to spend some time alone together.

Thorin hadn’t meant for it to happen, not really. He had just felt himself falling, and the feeling had completely and utterly terrified him. So naturally, he did what he always did; he pulled away, he withdrew into his mind where his ever-raging storm of self-doubts and insecurities welcomed him as an old friend. They slid into his mind, twisted his thoughts, spread their oily fingers through his very skin, until he was left facing down what he assumed was simply the inevitable. Eventually, he was going to be seen as he truly was, a burden, and his heart was going to be broken.
In the end, he did what he did best. He left.

Thorin fights with himself after his madness and the terrible battle that followed.

A coward. He is a coward.
The candle flickers slightly as he heaves a heavy sigh. He sets his quill down, lifting a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. This was certainly not the first time that melancholy thoughts of his burglar had distracted him from his work, nor would it be the last. His heart longed for the hobbit, longed for him to apologize, for Bilbo to forgive him. Only he was too scared to face the other outcome: that Bilbo would leave, both Erebor and himself, behind for good. While he knows that Bilbo’s departure is… inevitable, he wants it to at least occur on good terms, with the potential to write between them. However, his avoidance, for lack of a better word, has been making mending any bridges between himself and the hobbit impossible.
When he closed his eyes he could still feel Bilbo’s body beneath him, dangling over open air, his own hands threatening to open and let him fall.
He barely slept.
