For twenty years a hermit has been breaking into their home and others in the community and taking only what he needs to survive. Lance's parents assure him that the Hermit is harmless, but Lance isn't convinced. That's why he sets up a trap to catch the Hermit red handed. Only he doesn't catch a man breaking into his pantry in the middle of the night. No, he catches a boy his own age.

“What’s Keith’s type?” Lance blurted out like an idiot.
“It’s… obvious,” Pidge said. “He gets all flustered over shitty puns and most physical comedy. And have you seen the way he stares at Hunk when he’s going on about the mechanics of something? Like how the lions work? I’ve literally seen him blushing when Hunk goes into explanation mode.”
“So, you think he has a crush on Hunk?” Lance squawked.
“No. You bonehead,” Pidge laughed. “I’m saying any dad-joke-telling, klutzoid with good grades has probably got a pretty good shot at Keith.”Or: It figures that after years of getting it hilariously wrong face-to-face, Lance finally gets good at talking to Keith through a screen, which is, like, one of his biggest accomplishments. Then, Pidge makes the comment that Keith has a type, while heavily implying that it's Matt.

Summary
Keith has never really been good with words. He says what he means, and more often than not, what he doesn't mean, leading to several uncomfortable situations.
One of said occasions happens on a planet during a mission, where Keith's attempt at complimenting the blue paladin is entirely misinterpreted, but Keith isn't able to properly apologize before the mission goes south, resulting in Lance being subjected to the 'gifts' the locals possess.
So now Keith is at an impasse, with his communication skills severely lacking in the comforting department, and his growing feelings towards Lance making everything so much more difficult than it needs to be.

The first time Keith carried Lance on his back, it’s because Lance did some crazy ninja shit by jumping off God-knows-where up on the high-arched ceiling of the training deck, snapped the Gladiator’s neck between his ankles, and twirled off its shoulders just as it began to collapse. Next thing Keith knew, he had long, wiry limbs around his neck and his waist and he was severely unbalanced with the additional weight. He stumbled backward a few paces before he was able to get his feet underneath him and one hand under Lance’s–-
“HEY! At least buy me dinner first, jeez!”
