Thus, he finds himself here. In the confessional, waiting interminably to free the tearing, clawing beast inside him. To speak the words and unshackle the monster.

Summary
It's a beautiful Saturday morning: birds are chirping outside, the sun has risen, casting natural, warm light into their bedroom, and neither of them have any obligations for hours.
Goffredo, notably, has some things to say on this fine morning.
“Did you see the Twin Towers fall in 2001?” he asks, completely out of nowhere.

Summary
He feels like he’s losing his grip on reality with every second that this bizarre tableau goes unquestioned. “By ‘this sort of thing,’ what do you mean?”
“That’s a fair question to ask. Miracles, if I had to say.”
Vincent feels his blood run cold. “Miracles?” His voice audibly cracks.
“Our friend William of Ockham says so.”

Often, he prays—for various things. Release me from his grasp. Enlighten him. Make it known to him what he is doing to me. Please touch his hardened heart, Lord. Nothing happens. They continue in the same way as before.
And Aldo Bellini, a glutton for punishment, keeps coming when he is called. He is Cardinal Goffredo Tedesco’s dog. His bitch, even. A mutt, a mangy, unloved thing, but so desperate to be good. He is good, though? Right?

Summary
“Earth word is depression. It means sad mood that doesn’t go away easily. It’s caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.”
Rocky makes a frustrated little noise. “How fix, question?”
“I don’t know,” I say, and Rocky deflates a little. “Good chemicals.”
And that’s when I get a really stupid idea.
Ryland makes use of Ilyukhina's heroin during the road trip to Erid.

“I just think it’s kind of a messed-up thing to do to a baby,” I said.
AKA: the one with time travel. When the opportunity arises, Rocky and Ryland can't turn down the chance to save Rocky's crew.
It all kind of spirals from there.

Summary
Innocent is looking out of the window as though he can see something more there than the blackness of a howling winter night. “I find myself wishing for his guidance.”
“If it is of any comfort,” Aldo tries, “He trusted Thomas to steer the Church through the Conclave. He was sure of his integrity like he was of no one else’s here. And Thomas has complete faith in you. You can be sure of his counsel.”
“I know I can. He’s been a blessing.” At the mention of Thomas, Innocent had brightened, but there is something searching in his expression when he looks back at Aldo, like he hadn’t quite gotten the answer he wanted.
Or: Aldo and Vincent discover that they have some things in common.

Summary
Cardinal Thomas Lawrence experiences a miracle.
Immediately, he feels God must be punishing him, but what if instead of a punishment, it's a blessing?
(What if it's neither, and God just wants you to learn a lesson via the means of a Christmastime miracle, Thomas…)
