It often comes as a surprise to no one that Monet did not grow up in a particularly warm family environment. Weakness was frowned upon and kindness- the ultimate shortcoming. It was eat or be eaten, every cunning bitch and conniving bastard for themselves in the de Haan household.
Kindness and softness don't get you a wardrobe full of Louboutins and a full rotation of Chanel purses as well as annual holidays in Capri- no, pharmaceuticals and a nose for blood in the water are what get you all that.

Aki stares down at his hands, he knows Audrey hated it when he did that. Hates. She doesn't comment on it on this occasion though.
"He always-" Aki doesn't bother with names, doesn't think he'd be able to force the name out of his mouth if he's being honest. Judging by Audrey's sharp intake of breath, she's put two and two together. She's clever, his Audrey. "He's always saying," Aki manages a weak smile, "plenty of fish in the sea, right?" his smile feels brittle and Audrey isn't smiling back at him, "I guess I'm just going fishing."
Audrey opens and closes her mouth, her eyes look wet and that's the last thing Aki wanted.

Later, he texts her a picture of him watching it. She blocks his number.
OR
Monet and Aki aren't friends. Except they sort of are, when no one else is around.

When Aki was a kid one of his mother's friends had patted him on the head with the clinking of teacups on saucers in the background and turned to his mother to inform her, I can already tell, your son- his problem, Aki remembers it so vividly, his problem is too much heart, it's going to get him hurt when he's older.
So far, Aki generally thinks he's been tracking alright. Too much heart, yeah, he can see where she got that from but he doesn't think it's proven particularly fatal thus far. Just- inconvenient at times. But just now, meeting Max's dangerous gaze across the table... Aki, for the first time in his life, he wishes he had a little less heart and a little more self-preservation instinct.
Even just a smidgeon more wouldn't go amiss because he's still drinking in each gleaming white tooth in Max's feline smile instead of running for safety when he asks, "what are you looking at?"
