The dragon arrived early in the morning, and by noon the entire village was in a panic in the town hall. No one in the village knew anything about dragons, aside from what they’d heard in fairy tales and stories, and the plans for dealing with it were about that level of sophisticated.
“We’re not sacrificing a virgin to the dragon,” Viktor said in exasperation.
“Well what would you do?!” the mayor demanded.
“I’m going to go talk to it,” Viktor said reasonably, and got up from his seat and went to do just that.

A warlock’s heart is not safe in his own chest.
For over a century, Magnus has locked his heart away for his own safety. It's a cold and lonely existence, but he's never had anyone who loved him enough for him to offer it to. He hopes Alec may be the exception.
Magnus patted at his chest with his free hand. “Well, you know what they say about the heartless,” he said with a lightness he didn’t feel. “As cold as we are empty.”
Alec’s steps stuttered in surprise. “Whoever said that’s an idiot. You’re the fullest thing in my life.”

"No costume?" With a raised eyebrow, Magnus waved to the rest of the room. "And yet you’re throwing the biggest Halloween party this town has ever seen.”
“That wasn’t exactly my idea,” Alec said, staring down into his cup. His own reflection stared back at him, rippling through the dark red surface of the punch. “Izzy planned --" he gestured vaguely at the party "-- this.”
“Not a fan of Halloween?”
Alec had never been a fan. Things happened when the veil was thin -- strange things. While other children had spent Halloween dressed in costumes and asking for candy, Alec had spent it learning about magical protections, brewing potions, going to stuffy dinners back in the Other Realm. For years, it had been one of the many things that reminded him that he and his family just... weren't normal. And all Alec had ever wanted to be was normal.

Five years of a quiet sort of friendship that grew where neither one of them had been expecting it. Five years of convincing himself that this was all he was ever going to be able to have with Magnus.
Something finally had to give. Tonight, Alec had a choice to make. To go out there and meet Magnus, show him the truth of who he was, or, he could go back to his nest and hide out again, and continue to go out randomly at night in the hopes of being able to keep people here safe and maybe run into the sparkly warlock who made his heart beat a little faster each time they talked, and his magic sing.

He noticed before that, obviously. It’s hard not to--Magnus draws his eye whenever they’re in the same room, all the more when that room is their bedroom and Magnus isn’t dressed yet. He’s watched Magnus in their closet in the mornings, trailing his fingers over jewel-toned silk shirts and tunics before slipping on something dark and structured, watched him change his nail color by magic from violet to red to silver before settling on black, watched him snap his fingers to take the fine layer of dust off the eyeshadow palettes and glitters on his vanity even as he magics on his usual simple black eyeliner.

His eyes, still teary and soft from having just woken up, were so open in their adoration that Magnus had to close his eyes anyway, if only to keep breathing.
