Summary
The playoff run had left him with a knee injury he'd played through until they were swept by Carolina in the Eastern Conference Final. He hated to lose, but he was happy to be home, to finally break the long stretch of stress and strain that is playoffs hockey. There's a surgery scheduled to repair his knee and he'd been glad for that, ready to get onto recovery instead of reinjury, but as the day approached and he began taking preparations for it his anxiety began to coil, rumble, tighten around his gut, and jerk.
He didn't flinch at first, expecting it. He took his medication and added the as-needed Xanax, did restorative yoga and even resorted to smoking indica. He ran an extra mile each day in the evenings with Ilya, headphones blasting, knee only screaming a little, squeezed into its brace. Any other time, all of this would plateau the worry and relax the knot in his stomach, the tightness in his chest, the stocatto of his heart. As the surgery draws nearer, the tightness only ratchets further shut. He doesn't feel like himself, panicky and frazzled, scared out of his mind all in a rush here and there as he thinks, they're going to cut me open. They're going to put me under. I've never had surgery before...

Kip and Scott spend an evening "talking" about art.
They do this. The casual lectures during sex as a tease, the weird or funny conversations that find their way into exchanges like this, with Scott leaned back on his elbows and legs splayed out, Kip between them, knelt with his knees spread wide and back arched as he leans to run his hands up Scott’s abs and nibble along his inner thigh, raking his blunt nails back down Scott’s stomach with just enough pressure to make his lover nervous, trembling and gasping quietly. You’re expected here in Ottawa and let yourselves into the house when you arrive, meeting the Hollanders in the living room, a volleyball game put on mute. “Hi boys!” Yuna coos, coming in for her usual greetings. She hugs you tightly and you love the wisp of her perfume. You haven’t told her why, and Shane keeps buying it for her every birthday, as is their tradition. She looks at the large gift bag in your hand. “Honey, it’s your birthday…”
You shrug. “Sure, but it’s your anniversary!” You’ve had enough birthdays and holidays with the Hollanders that they know you prefer time with them or sentimental gifts like candid photos of you and Shane together. They are much the same, preferring a day together with your small, close family over anything material. You move just past them to the coffee table and set the bag down, opening the top and inviting them both to reach in. Shane stands beside you, biting back a grin.

I know and trust they’re both smart people and can guess how all that must have affected me, maybe explaining some of Rozanov, the only version of me they seemed to be familiar with, even if they don’t understand him that way yet. They know me and Shane are serious, that I love him fiercely and make him happy. They know enough.

“I just feel like I have to understand this guy!” Scott had insisted when Kip lightly teased him for the repeat reads of one of the most chilling killers he’d heard of so far from his murder-obsessed boyfriend. And he didn’t mind, not really, he could take the brutality and the dark subject matter because it meant Scott was glitter-eyed and excited and that was more than enough reason to sit in patient, loving silence and let him get it all out. Now and again, though, he does offer perspective.
“You want to understand someone who hunted and killed people for sport?” Kip had asked him flatly and Scott had pursed his mouth and stammered for a bit before simply nodding.

Summary
Shane and Ilya's first hockey camp is going swimmingly, and playing house at his parents' in Ottawa ain't so bad, either.
Watching Ilya with a line of kids lapping the rink to warm up had given me what I guess straight people refer to as ‘baby fever’. They bring out the kid in him, and not one who’s terrified and deeply sad but one who always wants to play, the side of him that will take wrestling around in bed a little too seriously and always wants to turn everything into a joke or game. He’d led the line of kids, calling after them, “come on my little ducklings!”, each of them keeping a puck handled tightly in front of them, picking up speed and getting a little more challenging each lap. When they’d moved on to slapshots, Ilya stopped the first one to make it into the net before she could go back to the end of the line, telling her very seriously, “Okay, now is most important part: now you say, давай!” He threw up his arms and shouted it, let’s go! The player repeated it and shyly thrust her stick up in the air. He did this with each scoring shot and then at the end with everyone to celebrate that they had finished the drills.

Summary
They've fought before. Argued. But never fought, not on the ice. Not until tonight.
Shane only has anything approaching metal in his music library for days like this, where he feels like his skin is on too tight and his nervous system is ready to crack like a spring, exploding out with all its contorted, stored force. He’s been swallowing down a lot lately, too busy off this last road trip to get enough downtime to bring himself back into something resembling balance. The guitars scream in his ears along with the screaming in his head, screaming he really wishes he could do right now. The only way he can articulate it is frustratingly vague: he feels off, like he’s a side of himself that only arrives when he’s so frayed at the edges it threatens to rupture and pour out of him until the pressure has equalized itself again.
He’d hoped that seeing Ilya in between morning practice and the evening game would be a way to release some of the pressure, open the valve a little with Ilya’s mouth and hands and cock and help him vent a little of the nerves and overwhelm with a good hard orgasm and the comfort of Ilya’s presence and warmth for what little time they had for the afternoon.

Rozanov had been the first indication of what was going on with you, prompting Hanna to send you to a specialist for assessment. You and Rozanov had had a very long chat, pacing the house and talking out loud to each other after the diagnosis was confirmed. You know there are more alters, are beginning to recognize them both in your present and looking back at your past through this new lens, this updated narrative, but for now, it’s only you and Rozanov that seem to have communication. Hanna has been boning up on her research and assures you that that can be very normal, and it will get clearer over time as you let the system work and be open to the experience.

“Here,” you start to dig into the bag again, pulling out a small tube of sunscreen formulated for the face. “At least get your nose, it’s already pretty crispy.”
“Thank you, babe,” he tells you sweetly, a sweetness you’re still so stunned by, and rubs a little on his fingers, getting his nose but ultimately needing your help to rub it in evenly. He rewards you with a kiss for your efforts and lays back against the rock. “You brought a joint?”
“Obviously.” You pull the preroll out of your bag and pop the little container, tapping it out into your palm and digging for a lighter. You’d started using cannabis a few years ago for your anxiety and found it incredibly useful, though you typically limit your recreational consumption to the summers. You cough every time but so does he and it makes you feel like less of a square. You don’t usually smoke it, typically enjoying edibles and tinctures better for medicinal use, but something about sharing a joint with Ilya makes you feel… normal? Not millionaire cup winning MLH captains. Not brand sponsors and role models or even sons in that moment. You’re just each other’s.

“Didn’t sleep at all. Worried like hell about you.”
“I know, I’m sorry… and I was planning on asking you something last night! I’m mostly pissed that got fucked up.” He pulls Ilya’s hand to his mouth for a kiss. “Will you… come to my cottage this summer?

Summary
Finally committed to each other, Shane and Ilya ring in a new year with some brave choices.
Even from here in the city, the sky is brilliantly clear and leaning back against the brick and looking up, I can see stars glittering. I pull out a cigarette and light it, taking a long first drag and letting it out with a sigh. “Goodbye, old friend,” I tell it in Russian, holding it up between thumb and forefinger. “You’ve been a great comfort, but it’s time to part ways.” I smoke in silence after that, hearing a few smaller fireworks already going off somewhere a few streets over, the whistle of a bottle rocket and the double pop. The passing of years is, to a point, quite arbitrary, but there is something about these cold, long, dark nights when the air is polished clear and clean and the stars shimmer a little brighter that draws me into reflection every year. Sometimes it’s good, reminding me of all the highlights and successes. Sometimes it reminds me how little I’ve done, how much my life is a blur of hockey and hockey-adjacent activities, but not a whole lot else.
Except of course for Shane. There is always Shane.

Summary
Ilya has an accident that takes him out of the game with Montreal, but still at least has Shane in town to help him lick his wounds.
“What the fuck happened?!” You reach out and gently cup his jaw to get a better view and he leans away from you, wincing.
“I got hit last night driving home from dinner with the boys.” He looks pissed and dejected about it. You realize his Audi wasn’t in the driveway but hadn’t really thought much of it. Svetlana takes it now and again when she’s in town, always returning it with a full tank of gas and freshly detailed.
“I’m fine, really,” he continues as you continue to worry and fret, looking him over more closely. “Feel like I’ve taken harder hits on the ice. It was the airbag and the seatbelt that did the most damage, anyway.” He pulls aside the collar of his t-shirt to reveal a livid stripe of bruising across his collarbone and shoulder.
Your eyes go wide, reaching out to grip his biceps. “Ilya! Jesus Christ, that looks brutal.”
He shrugs and grimaces. “I’ll live. C’mon, come in.”

After coming to terms with the way they feel about each other, Ilya and Shane settle into something more than they'd been before in the sanctuary of Shane's lakeside cottage.
Somewhere in the mist, loons chirp and call to each other, a skittering sound cut through with the long, mournful tones. The sun is up but the sky is grey, turning everything a kind of monochrome in the watery light. The placid mornings are heavenly enough that you’ve chosen the lake’s flat waters to watch this morning over coffee instead of laying in bed watching Shane sleep. It had been a hard decision, but there’s a lot on your mind, and some nagging voice in your head says they’re thoughts you can’t think in Shane’s presence lest your forehead turn to glass and he sees every thought and fancy. You know he can’t, but you know also he’s learning to read you, that your guards are down enough with him that you forget to cover everything in sarcasm and subterfuge. He’d know. If he saw you now with your mouth twisted in a contemplative little squiggle and your coffee going cold in its mug, he’d know that you’re thinking serious thoughts about him.
