Summary
Crystal hates her roommates cat. It's not just that he savaged her the first time she tried to pick him up, or that he watches her as she moves around the flat, or that she knows from the bottom of her soul that if Charles had to decide whether to keep Crystal or the cat she'd be out without a moment's hesitation. It's how obviously and unapologetically Edwin hated her first, from the moment he saw her.
He hates her, right?
So why is he planting himself between her and David like a tiny kitty bodyguard?

Summary
The client meets the smile with one of his own, his posture already loosening in response to Charles’ charm. “There’s an old lady who haunts the candy shop a few streets down from where I li-” he breaks off, smile fading. “Where I used to live. I told her I had a mystery I was trying to sort out, and she pointed me your way.”
Charles grins. “Good old Lizzie,” he says. “Not to worry mate. We’re aces with mysteries.”
A routine case looking into mysterious industrial 'accidents' goes sideways, resulting in Edwin leaning on his hell-forged pain tolerance to get them both out safely. Charles is less than thrilled about it.

Summary
The dead boy knows he could be confronted with any number of awful things, from demons to sinners to beings beyond his imagination.
What Charles hadn't anticipated seeing was himself.
Or his reflection, anyway. The one he hasn't seen in thirty-odd years, so unfamiliar to him that he nearly jumps at the sight of the soft slope of his mum’s nose, the concentrated furrow of his dad's brow. He recognizes some of the other fragments intrinsically, like the liner-smudged eyes that a pretty girl did up for him at his first concert, and the well-worn, pin-riddled jacket handed down to him from his friend's older brother.
But it's the sum of the parts, the lanky frame holding it all together that gives him pause — makes him lean in for a closer look. The boy in his reflection is just so real, so enticingly, unfairly life-like, that Charles can't help but reach out and touch.

Charles encounters a mirror that shows his reflection while on his mission to rescue Edwin from Hell. After realizing he can't travel through it, he moves on.
But what if he was pulled into Despair's realm instead?

Summary
Light flares up from the book, white and blinding. When she blinks away the spots from her vision the room is gone. The book is gone.
Dim green light casts a sickly pall down a long, decrepit looking hallway. She takes a breath and nearly chokes on the smell of dust and rot and something else, sharp and unnatural, like ozone. The light doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere in particular. It gives the place an eerie unreality. It makes her skin crawl.

Summary
The sight of the body in its nest of blankets comes with the same shock of wrongness it always does: the jaw a little too soft, the curves he knows are hidden under those layers of blankets, too noticeable even when he drowned them in loose jackets and baggy trousers. The little cues that still said girl no matter how short he cut his hair.
For a moment, the sense that that body belongs to a stranger is so strong, that he genuinely doesn’t register that he is looking at himself, pale and silent and unbreathing.

When a case without explanation points Benoit Blanc to the Dead Boy Detective Agency, neither boy was ready to meet their hero, nor be asked to be his pair of Watson's for the case.

People always expect Edwin to miss things from 1916. Charles expected him to miss aspects of life. Niko thought he would miss people. Crystal, and a number of their clients, generally the ones who are either quite unpleasant or quite concerned that Edwin will be unpleasant, expect him to miss larger aspects of society.
There really is very little he misses.
