The sight of Will like this reminds Hannibal of the model classic American boy in popular culture, the type Hannibal learned about in his younger years, a type Hannibal once loudly disapproved of. The carefree American mechanic listening to music while working on his car, grease on his hands and tools in them. He thought it was rough, uncouth, inelegant.
Hannibal wants to go back to his cynical self in his twenties and present him with this vision of simplicity, complexity, and beauty, make himself see just where he was wrong. He should have known to never assume. There is beauty in all things, after all, and that has never been more evident since knowing Will Graham.
