That impression does not last.

“Mother,” protested Jiang Cheng, unhappily. “Mother, he isn’t. You know he isn’t. They were just friends, Father and that lady. He said so, on his honour.”

So on Twitter I mentioned I’d love to read a daemon AU of MDZS.
And Kim said “Daemon fic - can you IMAGINE what WWX's daemon has gone through?!?!?”
And I didn’t really get it, until she added:
“I'm actually thinking more along the lines that with cultivators, daemons are linked to their golden core.
so.”
And then I burst into tears. Because how could Jiang Cheng not know his “new” daemon was Wei Wuxian’s? And how could WWX hide his own loss? And a whole new world of knives unfolded before me, so here is a window into that AU, through a series of vignettes, as posted on Twitter.

Lan Wangji's life has been about studying, and sharing quiet meals with his brother and uncle, and later studying and working on his research and occasionally teaching annoying undergrads their core-required physics courses, and feeding his rabbits. Oh, and music. Playing and writing music no one else will hear. It's a peaceful life. Thinking about it now, it's a really great life! And he's about to burn it down completely. Because today is the day Lan Wangji has contractually agreed to marry a complete stranger, in front of both their families and the camera crew of a reality television show.

The cart comes way before the horse in the reality series "Married at First Sight." Based on a hit Danish format, "Married..." features people who agree to participate in an extreme experiment: entering into a legal marriage with a complete stranger. Specialists use scientific matchmaking methods to pair each couple, who will not have met or had contact with each other until the wedding day. The series then documents the relationships, including honeymoons and other relatable events of married life. After several weeks, each couple must decide whether to remain together or go their individual ways.

The hilt of the boy’s sword told Bin it was an expensive weapon, worth probably more than his parents’ house. The steel blade was immaculate, the tip sharp; he could feel it nicking his skin, the sharp prick stinging right under his Adam’s apple.
Bin swallowed down the angry tears. He would not cry in front of a stranger, in front a boy clad in an expensive cloak, who probably never went hungry for a single day in his life.
Despite the tip of the boy's sword pressing against his throat, he wasn’t to be defeated. ‘Give it back! I shot it; it's mine!’
The boy’s dark eyes narrowed. ‘So you are claiming it as yours?’
Bin stilled. The woods belonged to the king, and with it all the game, every feather and beak, all trees and every blade of grass. He had no right to be here, let alone hunt.
