Dick’s usual huff of frustration. Medical beeps. Jason was in a hospital, then, or more likely home at the manor. He couldn’t remember the mission. He hoped he hadn’t fucked it up too badly. He tried opening his eyes and he could see, sort of, but there was some kind of filter over everything.
Bruce was next to him, adjusting something, telling Dick something about accelerated healing. “Hey, Bruce,” murmured Jason, into a sudden, stunned silence.
Dick swore.
Jason snapped fully back into consciousness, panic, and despair.

“It’s fine, Jason,” Dick says. “Chill out. I’m a grown adult, it’s not like Slade’s bothering a teenager anymore. It’s enrichment for me. I get a little shot of adrenaline and a bug treasure hunt. Sometimes he even makes me coffee.”
“And you drink it?”
“Well, yeah. It’s my fucking coffee, I’m not going to waste it.”
“I’m going to kill him,” Jason decides aloud. “Next time I see that man, I’m gonna kill him.”
“No, Jason, do not,” Dick says in the same tone Jason uses to tell his dog not to chew on his boots.

Moments, flashes really, when the world turns cold and his stomach flips, his eyes burn for no reason and all thoughts in his head just float away. Moments of a deep and unrelenting sense of unbelonging, when his own presence, his whole existence feels like a liminal space.
Moments when Jason Todd knows he is not dead—not anymore. But he doesn’t feel alive, either. He’s stuck, in the space between spaces, the moment between moments, when he wants desperately to wake up, or to stop feeling anything at all.
It is possible, Jason concedes, that he needs quite a lot of therapy."

Summary
An ~UtRH AU that follows the events of A Death in the Family and diverges from canon at some point during Lost Days (pre that scene, which is most definitely not a part of this AU). Survival Instincts starts out after Jason has been in Gotham for several months. His plans to establish himself in the Gotham underworld have run into some snags and his motivations are in flux.

John openly regarded him. "I heard you died," he said casually.
"Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated," Jason quoted, taking another sip. John could have sworn his aura intensified a touch. It might have been his imagination. This damned amulet was going to give him a migraine.
"Really? Seemed like more than just rumors to me," he needled.
"I look dead to you?" This time John was sure; the kid's aura flared.
The effect was noticeable even to John's mundane eyes now. Not as a light, but as something kinetic in Jason's posture, an alertness in his eyes, a subliminal whisper in his breathing. Alive alive alive alive alive.
"No, you really don't, mate," John said thoughtfully.
