Summary
John and Mary Grayson taught their son the great power in the simple act of a kiss. Kisses can heal, they can soothe anger or sadness, give confidence, be gifts of gratitude, or even make you laugh. The point is, they mean ‘I love you’. Dick’s parents might be gone now, but he’s going to make sure the lessons they taught don’t die with them, even if the rather emotionally constipated individuals on the receiving end might be a little confused.

That was fine. It made complete sense. He never expected them to. And even this, he knew it didn’t mean anything. It wasn’t intentional, and yet…

“LAPD. I’m Sergeant Grant,” she asserted quickly. Unconsciously, she glanced around at each of the firemen’s faces, searching for Hen. She didn’t see her, so Athena focused on the three men approaching her. “Got a call about a stabbing. Unknown assailant.”
Besides a few flushed faces and strained breathing, none of them looked overly spooked like they’d been put face to face with the perp. Whoever they were had certainly fled.
“Well, actually, his name is Maurice,” said the low, rich voice of the tall man who’d reached her first. His toffee-brown eyes locked onto her as he got closer, glittering, holding something wrapped in a towel—which, only now, Athena realized was a full-grown rooster.
Without missing a beat, the fireman slipped it right into her arms.

Athena blinked, and then that spine-tingling smile of hers caught the light. “Really? In what way?”
Bobby straightened up. He was too far in to back out. “I could take you to dinner.”
Her eyes sparkled. “Only if I say yes.”
“Well… what do you say?”
The world around them faded into the usual city noise, but Bobby didn’t hear it. His heartbeat had drowned it all out, thudding against his ribs and echoing in his ears. How she didn’t hear it, he didn’t know. But from the look she gave him—half-amused, half-knowing—maybe she did.
