“Y’know, just because I happened to be in the kitchens at the same time that something burned doesn’t mean I’m the one who burned it,” Stiles grumbled to the surrounding trees, pretending they were Harris as he dragged a sack full of slightly too snappy gingersnaps behind him. “I wasn’t even on kitchen duty this time! And blaming me for distracting someone else with my ‘weird oranges’ is absolute reindeer shit,” he defended, his voice ringing out in the open air. He’d already said his piece to Harris directly and had been sent out on trash detail without a sleigh as a result: apparently since Stiles wasn’t on kitchen duty, that meant he was not only “slacking off,” but also technically stealing from the kitchens to make kumquat marmalade. Also, making up filthy names for weird oranges.

Just like every other time Derek had managed to reach this point, Stiles stood uncharacteristically still in the doorway, wearing the same threadbare black tee and blue plaid sleep pants. Even his hair was mussed exactly the same, soft and rumpled and wavy without an abundance of product. And also just like every other time, he remained silent, wordlessly cocking the gun in his hands and wrapping his long fingers around to pull the trigger.
Derek only had enough time to let out the beginnings of a howl, the sound mournful and frustrated, nearly as deafening as the crack of the gun going off, and cut off just as fast by the bullet Stiles didn’t hesitate to fire.
