“I thought they didn’t need to be this big anymore?”
McCoy hums in confirmation, explains further, with the clear patience and understanding of a doctor who’s good at his job:
“They don’t, if you don’t want them to be. You don’t even have to have scars if you don’t want to keep them. I wanted a scar, worked with an artist and my doctor before the surgery to design these. You can do pretty much anything you want, at this point, the technology has gotten that good.”
Kirk can’t look away from the scars, something turning over in his head.
[Post Enterprise Incident, having his Romulan ear points removed makes Kirk consider something new: the possibility of gender affirming surgery. Bones is there to help him out, like always.]

Summary
Malcolm likes art, makes it himself, and Trip wants to understand that part of him, wants to understand what draws him to it. Malcolm is engrossed in the museum map, planning next steps, just looking at everything that’s here, even the exhibits they would never have time to visit. Trip watches the holograms twirl, wonders how they work, itches to take the emitters apart and study them. The museum probably wouldn’t appreciate that, though. Definitely not, actually. Trip finds the holograms a little refreshing, after hours of looking at the old war machines in the hallways.
[Malcolm and Trip use their day off from Enterprise to visit an airplane and early spacecraft museum on Earth.]

Chloe smiles again, throws her head back a bit, suddenly looking very young, like a girl at a concert, facing up at a blue sky with a shining sun. She looks back down, meeting his eyes, and says fondly:
“Look at the two of us. More than one person now, doubles, with our own doppelgangers inside us, unsure which of the two are the ‘real’ us. But maybe it’s both? We have to live this way, after all, and trying to get back to a previous self that doesn’t exist any more won’t do us any good.”
She turns serious, her hands stilling suddenly, and says with a great weight behind it:
“You’re still you, Rush.”
“There you go,” says Rush, approvingly. He’s proud of her, and it shows. Rush has a habit of thinking he can conceal his visible emotions. He really can’t. “It’s quite incredible how presenting people with a situation similar to their own will help them draw the right conclusions. Then, they realize that those answers apply to themselves, too.” He raises his eyebrows. “Doesn’t always work, to say the least, but I had a feeling it might do the trick here.”
