Summary
“Where’ve you gone, man?” Marty won’t let go of him. He can feel himself digging his fingers into jawbone, won’t let up until he can squeeze the apathy out.
Rust says, “Same place, Marty,” and Marty grips hard enough to bruise.
Rust’s hand reaches up slowly and folds over the hand on his face. He pulls Marty off him finger by finger, and when he opens the door Marty thinks he’s going to walk out into the threat of oncoming traffic. Instead, he curves over- more legroom, fresh air- and starts unbuckling Marty’s belt.

Summary
Rust — Rust a fool — allows himself to imagine a world in which he turns. A world in which they solve this together, they grind it out and start thinking, really thinking, pavements and hard man-hours, answer to nobody but themselves, they solve it. Marty turns. Let this be that world — it’s the world of shit-all else, it’s the world where Rust wakes up wishing he hadn’t every fucking morning, the world in which he knows the sound a child’s bones, still soft, make under the wheels of an ‘84 Mercedes 230CE — let him have this, just this. Only this.
Marty doesn’t turn. Marty mutters under his breath, “Sanctimonious prick,” and Marty leaves.
They arrest Rust twenty-one days later.

Summary
Rust can feel Macie's eyes like a songbird’s wingtips along the side of his face as she slides back onto the seat next to him, curling one bare foot up under her like she might need it for leverage to leap up and spring away.
“Can I play with your hair?” she asks, and at first Rust thinks he heard her wrong, wonders if his ears are going to start pulling the rug out from under him now in cohorts with his eyes, whispering things in a toddler’s voice that he’d have to bash clean from his skull to escape. But neither the fine sheen of sweat that breaks out on his forehead or the shyness in her small voice belies the fact, and he blinks at her once and again before he can force the half-hoarse word out of his throat in a gentle rasp.
“What?”

Summary
Marty wonders, feet up on the sofa and cat rumbling on his chest like an old machine, what the place looks like where Rust does the living-people-shit he can never picture him doing. Do people change in ten years’ time? Does Rust have white walls? Furniture? Does he still do away with garbage and want-things or, alcoholic he’s become, do inane objects pile up on his surfaces like barnacles on an Alaskan fishing boat? He’s not meticulous— long hair— but he cares some— ponytail, no beard. He labors under the illusion of having a self. (Marty remembers that; he doesn’t remember everything, but he remembers that).
or, an exploration of Rust and Marty's relationship from 1995-2012.

Summary
They don’t talk, which, Marty usually got something to say when they’re eating, something idle about the news or sports or the weather, and that he ain’t talking means that he’s probably thinking about it too, the touch of his hand across the line of Rust’s ribs, the way that line is burning under Rust’s borrowed flannel.

Submission is a matter of handling someone. Rust hates to drive but he’s going to need something to do with his hands, with his eyes, some lost hall of memory to fall back into as Marty says, “Gay rodeo,” twitchy in the passenger seat, and, “What d’ya make of that, huh?”
— October 2000, Rust and Marty catch a case that has two worlds colliding.

Summary
Crash is in thirteen places at once, thirteen pieces, and today is the day. Today has to be the day. The whine of static in his ears and the way the coke hones the corners of his vision sharper than Ginger’s Bowie knife. The way if this ain’t the end of it then he’ll beg for Miles’s bullet, maybe. He’ll beg for it.

Summary
“What’re you seein’,'' Marty asks, mostly just to confirm that Rust’s actually alive and not tied up naked to a tree somewhere for Marty to find. He hasn’t quite built up the courage to turn and look at him yet.
“You ever been to a club, Marty?” It’s slurred and slow, but more confident than before and Marty can actually understand him this time—or at least he can make out the words. Rust’s always been an enigma. Either he’s spewing philosophical bullshit that Marty’s not sure anyone but Rust actually understands (and maybe not even Rust at times) or his lips are zip-tied shut for hours and not even case-talk will get him going. “A club. Blinding lights and even louder music that shakes your skull so hard you’re not sure you’re hearing the lyrics or if it's your body screaming at you. It’s a little like that.”

Summary
Rust glares at him, and for a moment, Marty thinks he’s gonna put up a fight, but he relents, letting Marty take the lead on undressing and cleaning the wound; he moves slowly, despite Rust’s interjections that he ain’t gonna break. The laceration itself is objectively hideous; it’s about seven inches of jagged edges strung so tightly together like the baseballs he saw with the Ragin’ Cajuns at USL. It’s scabbed, painted with dried blood, and still so fresh it’s barely scarring. Yet, in spite of all that, Marty, in some fucked up way, thinks it’s one of the best sights he’s seen in a while. After being surrounded with antlers and portraits of spaghetti men with green ears, after having nightmares about Marie Fontenot and seeing Childress and Carcosa when he closes his eyes, staring at Rust’s serrated skin as he tends to it is a relief. It’s a relief because they’re alive.
Rust and Marty, after everything.

I told myself I wouldn’t do this, but here it is happening. My first foray into True Detective fanfiction. I guess this could fit a few of the proffered prompts: Mostly rambling, mostly synesthesia related, but also sprinkles of visions and several miles of hot Louisiana road in vaguely amicable car rides while out on the beat.
Vaguely Marty/Rust if you squint, but that sun’s awful bright, so I know that you will.

Rust rubs his thumb over the spine of his notebook. “Not the end of the day yet.”
It’s 4:43 by the clock on Marty’s dashboard. “Near enough,” he says, and when Rust still doesn’t move, “Get the hell out of my car so I can go home and see my kids.”
