“Yeah but. Do you want me to have the ring?” Naim asks. The sides of his lips are all cut up, melting into the swollen gash of his mouth. The entire left side of his face is scraped from being forced onto the concrete. It’s ghastly. He’s still the prettiest person Ryan’s ever seen.
Naim’s really asking if he wants him or not, and Ryan does, of course he does. “Of course,” says Ryan.
Somehow, there are much more monstrous things in the world than the demon who wears Naim's face. Once they pledge their commitment to one another, Ryan finds out just how much.

"You’re not going to believe this,” Naim says with a laugh. He takes a long drag of the cig. “That crazy lady in there thinks you’re beating me up. Like, straight up thinks you’re giving me all these scratches and bruises and shit.”
Naim expects him to laugh, but Ryan doesn’t. He looks absolutely stricken. The color drains from his face. He stops in the middle of the sidewalk. “On purpose?”
5 months after setting off to build a life of their own, Naim and Ryan are still plagued by attacks from the entity. It's hard to avoid getting defensive wounds.
Naim's boss thinks Ryan is responsible.

They were living together, almost properly. The dingy motel room had become like a makeshift apartment. Yeah, they had no stove or oven or whatever. But Naim worked on his portfolio at the desk while Ryan folded laundry on the bed. They ate frozen meals out of the microwave together every night. They fell asleep in the same bed at night and Naim walked Ryan to work in the morning. It was domestic. Naim wasn’t supposed to get this. He had thought he’d never get this. Nothing. Naim wanted to say. Nothing at all.
Instead, his eyes caught on the coloured bottles on his nightstand, some of them tipped over on their sides from the mattress bumping the nightstand. Naim squeezed his eyes shut, feeling his cheeks grow blotchy with embarrassment as he rolled over, pressing his face into Ryan’s chest,
“It’s stupid,” Naim said, muffled, slowly lifting his head and threading his fingers through Ryan’s mussed curls, “It’s not even-”
Ryan smiled, the cold metal of his rings kissing Naim’s flushed cheeks as he cupped his boyfriend’s face,
“Just say it, dickhead.”
Naim swallowed around the words, forcing himself to slow down,
