One look at his brother made Darry drop the sock in his hand. Sodapop wasn’t grinning, wasn’t cracking a joke or talking a mile a minute like he usually did. Instead, his eyes were rimmed red, and his shoulders were drawn tight.
Soda closed the door behind him.
That was when Darry knew it was serious.
“Soda?” he said carefully, already frightened by the silence. Sodapop was never quiet.
“Sandy’s pregnant.”

Johnny was gone.
Ponyboy couldn't even think the word dead. The words didn’t feel real yet. They were just noise in his head, echoing over and over, getting louder until they were all he could hear.
A dog barked relentlessly in the distance, and crickets sung in the way they do when the season's just turning to autumn. Ponyboy couldn’t feel his feet hitting the pavement. Dally had bolted from the hospital like that mad dog. Ponyboy had barely registered it at the time—too hollow, too stunned—because Johnny was d— gone.

Fifteen was another age his parents wouldn't get to see him reach. He wanted to hold onto what was left of that younger Ponyboy, the version of himself his parents would recognize. He worried that the older he got, the farther he would stray from the boy they raised.
But he knew that no matter what he did, he couldn’t stop time. He had to keep marching on, growing older in honor of those who didn’t get the chance.
It's the day before Ponyboy's fifteenth birthday, and he's feeling conflicted.

Sighing, Pony lifts his head just enough that Darry can see the unfocused look in his eyes. “My head hurts real bad, alright? Everything’s too loud and the lights keep doing weird stuff.”
Darry’s brow furrows. “What do you mean ‘weird stuff’?”
Pony gives another small shrug. “I dunno, like…going in and out or something.”
The pieces are starting to fall into place in Darry’s addled brain and the picture they’re revealing isn’t a very pretty one. Just like their mother, Darry’s been getting migraines on and off ever since he hit puberty, but so far both his brothers have been spared the family curse.
It looks like Ponyboy’s luck has finally run out.
