Mia keeps things compartmentalized.
The job fits in one box. Home in another. Ethan — his laughter, his awful scrambled eggs, his stupid sci-fi movie nights — she doesn’t let herself touch that box unless she’s alone and drunk or bleeding.
But even that boundary starts to blur after a while.
Because sometimes the packages hum. Sometimes they breathe, in a way that makes the air feel thick, like something alive is caught just beneath the surface of plastic and steel. And she hears stories — from other agents, from whispers in the docking bays — about test sites and defectors and lab techs who vanish mid-shift.
