Avery should have been home 30 minutes ago. 25 minutes ago, Derek started rifling through the incomprehensible knowledge in his mind to try and figure out if he was on his way, maybe struggling up the stairs to the fourth floor with a heavy bag of groceries. 20 minutes ago, he had already seen at least three terrible possibilities in high definition – a random, undetected heart condition; an armed street robbery; falling debris from a construction site. 19 minutes ago, he had sat by the door, staring out of the peephole to try and recalibrate himself to the real world and the facts he knows to be true: Avery is sometimes fashionably late, Avery only went to buy dinner, Avery promised never to leave him.
He’s still here, 19 minutes and 13 unanswered calls later. Another fact: Avery has never not answered the phone.
Or: Avery gets into a minor accident on the way home, and Derek's infinite knowledge means infinite worry.
