He flattens his mouth into a tight line, obviously resisting the urge to fall into another fit. “So, your friends think you’re bringing a date with you to DC, they think the date is me, and you wanna get out of this without getting caught in a lie or giving an explanation that might make it worse.”
Steve sighs, nodding. “Yeah,” he says. “That’s the gist of it.”
“Well, you’ve already dug yourself this deep,” Bucky says, suddenly sober. “Why don’t you just tell them I’m coming?”

Like his mother before him, Steve Rogers is a witch. Unlike Sarah, Steve is not a terribly good witch.
Sarah had told him to lean into his strengths, and not long for something that he didn't have, but he can't help trying. She's gone—lost to a cancer she couldn't heal—and Steve sometimes feels like the only way he'll fill the ache in his chest is by trying to live up to her legacy.
So he's gone and gotten himself a familiar.

Bucky opened his eyes and rolled his shoulders, trying to ease some of the tension out of his back. When Steve’s words sunk in, though, he turned and leaned forward, staring past Steve’s chest to look out the window. Beyond the wing of the plane, he found a beautiful coastline with white sand, blue waters, and palm trees, as well as rows of bungalows on the water.
“Wow,” he murmured. “We’re staying in one of those, right?”
In which Steve invites Bucky on a trip to Fiji and they discover something a lot more than beautiful vistas and friendly locals.

Between the rough sheets stretched rumpled across the bed, two boys curl like a set of parentheses around each other and their breaths mingle arhythmically in that dark place behind Bucky’s eyelids. It’s still night until he looks; it’s still night, and he doesn’t have to move.
But then: a shift, Steve’s head rolling a little where it rests on Bucky’s chest, soft-fine hair rasping against Bucky’s collar bone. A quiet, wet cough.

Summary
Modern Winter Soldier AU where Bucky is a genie who became HYDRA's Asset.
When HYDRA found the Tesseract they also found a genie in a bottle. Knowing a genie's wishes are a trap that will turn and bite you, they used the power of the Tesseract to enslave the genie. It cost them three wishes but it bought them an Asset with power greater than any human and for 70 years they used him to work HYDRA's will on the world.
Until they lost him.
His bottle washes up on a beach and he's found by a new Master, Steve Rogers. Steve, horrified at having absolute power over someone, has a very different approach to being in control of a genie. While Bucky waits for his new Master to show his true colours they're trying to work out how to live with each other. Bucky doesn't trust Steve, Steve's friends don't trust Bucky, and no one realises HYDRA has not let their Asset go so easily.

“It’s no use,” Natasha tells Sam. “You won’t get him to go out and flirt. Steve here’s a married man.”
They’re somewhere in Croatia, and Sam’s been hard at work, trying to pull Steve away from a busy night of sketching and staring at his phone. He wants to go out and drink plum brandy and dance with the locals.
