There was a firm hand on his bicep, pushing his body back up, out of their embrace, leaving no room for argument or protest. Ahab's eyes were open, and boring into his, lightning flashing within.
Starbuck froze, registering the sharp tone and the touch for what they were: a warning.
"Captain," he asked, "do I overstep?"
Ahab sat up, recovering the height lost by his reclinings. He did not look at Starbuck as he answered, too quickly to be anything other than instinct: "Yes."Series

Tomorrow morning, the sun will dawn upon the White Whale’s inexorable spout, his hump like a snow-hill, and for the next three days Ahab will chase that haunted whale across the horizon till one of them spouts black blood, and all will collapse, and the great shroud of the sea will roll on as it rolled five thousand years ago. This is how it goes.
But perhaps not this time. Perhaps...Or: Ahab, choosing to live.

This fic is a look at what it would take to convince Ahab to abandon his chase, to finally turn around, to save himself and his crew and choose life instead. It picks up immediately after The Symphony, goes through all three days of the chase, and then continues on after. It is a fix-it fic, and a Mostly everyone lives AU, but keeps one very significant, canon-compliant death from the book's second day of the chase.Series

Annabelle Cane has a choice to make.
(Annabelle Cane is not sure what choice is anymore).
She sits and thinks and sighs and drums her fingers against her thigh, wisps of web trailing from her hands. Jonathan Sims’ face lights up her laptop screen, washed out and desaturated against the garish pale green of the Institute’s (horribly outdated) website, and even as Annabelle tells herself Jonathan is a very common name, Sims perhaps not so much but still not entirely outside the realm of possibility, and really, can she really recognize him after so long apart, and this could be any Jonathan Sims marked by the Web and tugged towards the Institute — she does not need to look too closely to know it is her Jon. Her Jon, all borrowed skirts and traded books, laughter and sheet music and sea-sprayed nostalgia and skittering, scuttling, scurrying spider’s legs.
It wasn’t supposed to be him.

You see, dear reader, all the best stories are laced with magic.
When Jon was a child they heard stories of Wordsmiths, those brave and brilliant creatures who wove their words into witchcraft. True magic was hard to come by, true storytelling harder still, and their gifts were treasured and praised in the sunshine-colored memory of Jon’s youth. Jon has long known the tales of the Wordsmiths speaking reality to the shape of their throats, tuning the world to the key of their songs.
And then King Magnus took the throne.
The King coveted the Wordsmiths’ magic. Coveted the power they wielded. It was not long before Jon was summoned to the King’s court and found themself proffering up their fear like a feast for the King’s ravenous stare.
And so we arrive here.--
