"He barely registers the names on the cups at this point, even while calling them out to hand off to cafe patrons. He doesn’t look up much, or try for the polite smiles and eye contact he usually would, and conversation is completely beyond him by now. It’s all too much and his body is screaming at him, and he just wants to go home and rest, though he knows that being home won’t exactly be restful in the way he needs.
“Serious?” he calls out, moving to grab a lid for the latte he has just finished, so he can hand it off. He’s distracted. That’s the only explanation. He’s distracted by the throbbing burn in his now overtaxed arthritic hands, and the ridiculousness of anyone being named Serious, as it had been written on the cup by the barista manning the till, and then all at once by the face (the goddamn handsome face) of the man who has stepped forward to the counter to claim it."
