He has almost all of doors off by the time Eddie comes in through the back door, his hair up in an untidy bun, smears of dirt on his hands and a smudge on his cheek, “what have you been doing baby?”
“They put a sold sign on the old house. Someone is going to move in,” Eddie tells him, like that’s an explanation.
“Okay..? So what were you doing?”
Eddie scrubs his hands at the sink, “replanting the trees.”
“What...trees?” Steve asks, a vague inkling starting to form. He stands, leaning past Eddie to be able to look out of the window and...sure enough, a new row of saplings are at the end of the yard, “Eddie...what did you do?”
“They’re my pear trees, I couldn’t leave them there.”
