There were the grins, broad and beaming and rare, taking Nicky himself by surprise but rarely Joe, who had made it his explicit goal some seven hundred years ago to draw those grins from him as often as he was humanly able.
And then there was this: his lips stretched taut, a grimace in all but name, a baring of teeth, a statement of purpose that brought its greatest discomfort because, not in spite of, being presented as a gesture of joy.
