Sirius was in the kitchen when he heard the front door open and close behind tired footsteps. He’d already filled the kettle, knowing that his husband would soon be home, so he lit the stove and pulled a couple of cups out of the cupboard.
“Tea or coffee, love?” he called through, spooning some coffee grounds into a mug for himself. If Remus chose coffee, Sirius knew he wouldn’t see him behind a pile of marking all night. Whereas tea meant cuddles on the sofa and usually early to bed, but not necessarily early to sleep. Sirius waited, one hand on the tea caddy, but there was no reply. Something was off.
“Remus?” Sirius stepped towards the kitchen door, but he didn’t get far before Remus entered and Sirius’s suspicions were instantly confirmed. Usually, Remus’s shoulders would sag tiredly, his expression soft and weary when he arrived home from work, but not today.
“Alright, baby?” Remus said quietly, voice low and rough.
