    Summary

“And you’re sure there’s nothing for you?” David says suddenly. “You’re not—you’re feeling okay? You’re not sick? Shane wouldn’t have any reason to think that you’re sick?”

Ilya blinks and turns to him. “I am fine. Totally fine. Better than fine, even, before today.”

    “It’s just—Shane’s acting like you’re dying, Ilya.”

“Not as far as I’m aware,” says Ilya. “And I do not think he would learn this before me.”

The summer before Ilya joins the Centaurs, Shane wakes up nervous. It doesn't stop from there.

Will I even be able to come back and reread this? Maybe. Nearly killed me the first time.
It's just so freaking good. And devastating. But so so excellent.

This is such a fun concept! Ilya and honesty have such a strained relationship in The Long Game so it was fantastic (and sometimes stressful) to see how different things could be with total transparency during that time. Shane proving as he always does when things are made plain that he would move heaven and earth for Ilya, just like Ilya would do for him. Also yay Troy! I love his and Ilya's friendship.

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov's life takes an unexpected turn when a deadly plane crash in 2021 takes his life, right after a fight with his long-time partner, Shane Hollander. Though instead of the afterlife, Ilya is sent back to December 2008, just before his NHL career began, on the very day that he first met Shane. He finds himself in a familiar world, with knowledge of both the future and knowledge of the man he loves and the friends he holds dear.

As Ilya navigates this new reality, he rebuilds his relationship with Shane, who is still finding his path in both hockey and his identity as a gay man. With their rivalry blossoming into a different experience than the one Ilya experienced the first time around, the two face challenges around acceptance, family pressures, and the struggles of being openly gay and lovers in the sports world. Throughout their journey, Ilya contemplates his first life, cherishes the present, and strives to alter the course of their futures (and the futures of their friends) for the better.

Or, Ilya Rozanov discovers first hand what the butterfly effect is, and how it can drastically alter the future.

Will I ever tire of time travel fix-its as a trope? Probably not. But this is an especially satisfying example.

Ilya tries to breathe. Shane is the one who panics. In fact, Ilya has been so calm over the past hour. So, so calm. Soooooooo so so so amazingly calm that maybe Shane will reward him with a very nice blowjob later. Ilya has been calm because Shane needs a rock to lean on, but Shane is gone and now Ilya is panicking. This is his only chance to rectify the first, shirtless impression he made on Shane’s father.

I love Svetlana and Ilya's friendship so much. I'm still crying over the last chapter of this.

    Summary

What if Shane never got injured?
What if Ilya decided to finally take a step back?
What if the 5th best player of MLH was suddenly spotted hanging out hockey's golden boy Shane Hollander?
What if Ilya had a few feelings about it?

    —×—

Ilya is aware of Sebastian Hawthorne like he's aware of all the top 10 players of the league. Though he knows no one can come close to him and Hollander, he still likes to keep an eye out for them.

Hawthorne, or as his teammates call him, Hawk, joined the Toronto Guardians during his Rookie season and has been there for the past six seasons. He's the assistant captain.

“It's like he’s already seen the play unfold five seconds ahead,” Shane had once complained to Ilya over the phone after a particularly nasty loss against the Guardians some seasons back. Ilya then got the impression that Shane didn't like him either.

So imagine his surprise when the picture of Hollander and Hawk shows up on his feed: laughing and practically having the time of their lives while leaving a high-end bakery.

I have had a lot of thoughts about Shane's line during the hospital scene where he said he had a whole plan that he was mad at Marleau for messing up. This fic provides one of the most satisfying/devastating ways for that night to have gone as originally planned.
