“No?” the man said. “And where might this dashing fellow countryman of mine be?”
“Right here, actually,” Remus said with a lopsided grin, finally turning to face the newcomer. “I’m Re-”
He stopped halfway through his introduction to gape at the man in front of him. His pale skin was littered with tattoos – most of them black as his hair, which fell in waves that just barely touched his slim shoulders – and the grey v-neck tee he wore left little of his toned figure to the imagination. But none of these things were the primary focus of Remus’s attention. That honour would go to the man’s eyes – grey and sparkling with the vivacity of a summer storm, flecked with golds and blues if one only looked closely enough. They were eyes Remus would recognize anywhere.
Because Remus had seen them before.

A chance meeting in Remus's least favorite city on Earth forces him to reckon with the fact that he may never have fallen out of love with an old friend.

“Would you like some advice?” Remus asked him, leaning in to speak over the loud music and their laughing friends.
“I’m all ears,” Sirius responded, shifting closer and thinking he’d take any opportunity to have Remus’s undivided attention.
“Well, firstly, when you swing your arm back, it doesn’t swing straight.”
Sirius snorted beer up his nose and spluttered mortifyingly as he coughed. He covered his nose and mouth with his free hand while he put down his beer and blindly fumbled for a napkin as he coughed, wishing the floor would swallow him whole.
“Okay?” he heard as a warm hand placed a paper napkin into his palm and he used it to clean himself up.
“Y-yeah,” ... “It’s just that not swinging straight has been a persistent theme in my journey so far.”

“Yes,” James hissed, “and he’ll knock my teeth out if I kiss his little brother.”
“You can take a hit, Potter, I’ve seen you on the quidditch pitch,” Regulus waved him off, and James groaned, leaning away from him.
“Oh, yeah, great, so I’m the sacrifice,” he sighed.
“Precisely,” Regulus stepped right into his space, and James felt his chest go a little hot.

James started laughing, dragging Peter along and Sirius was beaming, proud.
Remus tried his best but the stupid smile still made its way onto his face. “You idiot, I was kidding!” he said but he couldn’t sound mad even if he tried.
Sirius just shrugged but his eyes were bright when he said, “Happy birthday, Remus!”

A pigeon on the sidewalk across the street flutters away.
Another voice cuts through the cold. “You okay?”
Bucky looks up to see a silhouette on the fire escape two floors above him. Clearly, he had been swearing louder than he intended to.
The figure is clearly male, and built like a fucking brick house, but the light behind him makes any other features vague and indistinguishable.
“Uh, yeah,” Bucky says dumbly. “I just- I forgot my keys.”
“I’ll let you in.”
The silhouette disappears from view.
Bucky steps forward to retrieve his groceries from the steps of the building, and has just picked up the last can of cat food when the door opens. He looks up to meet the man who saved him from hypothermia.
And what a man it is.

“I miss you when you’re over there. Sorry it’s been so busy this fall,” he said, earnest in the way only Steve Rogers, the world’s prickliest person, could be.
He held out the full mug of coffee and Bucky hurried to take it and inhale a tongue-scalding sip before he could do something very stupid like ruffle his hair or kiss his forehead.
It was infuriating, really. Aim any sort of affection and care at Steve and he turned into the human equivalent of a cactus. But then he’d switch it back around at you and you were supposed to just take it and not want to kiss that soft smile off his lips. Bucky sucked on his burned tongue. Fucking unfair, was what it was.
Bucky has been back in Brooklyn for four months, sleeping on his best friend's couch while interning at his dream job. It should be great.
Except for how sharing a space with Steve means seeing him every day and touching him and always, always trying not to look at him too much or touch him for too long.
