You slam Haymitch against the wall of your compartment. You pin him there and demand him to shut up. Tell him to tell you that he's lying to you. Haymitch will tell you that he is a Victor, same as you, why would he lie? You know that he's right and you hate him for it. He's telling you the truth and you know he is and that means that Finnick is dead and that you don't have him anymore.
He says he can come back and you tell him to get out.
You stand there in the doorway and suddenly you don't remember how to talk. You taste blood in your mouth from a cut that shouldn't exist.

Summary
Johanna pauses at the sound of a cannon. She finds that Finnick is doing the same, she can feel it in her throat, and lets out a silent sigh of relief. Johanna continues to move, squeezing the hilt of her axe. She had been able to briefly meet with Finnick at the Cornucopia, where he had managed to grab a trident. Johanna had seen Katniss, who managed to get a bow. All of their specialty weapons were there, waiting for them. Johanna is surprised that they didn’t have little ribbons tied around them.
Johanna pauses again when she feels a rush of panic flood her body. Finnick’s. Johanna pushes through it, reminding herself that she cannot show anything to the Capitol. Johanna cuts through shrubs and vines, finding that the panic does not still. It does not go away, and it only gets worse as the seconds tick by. Somehow, the seconds feel like minutes, and she can feel her anxiety building up. Johanna stomps it down, gritting her teeth as she does so. Forcing Finnick’s feelings out of her body feels wrong in a way like nothing ever has.
It almost feels like a betrayal.

Summary
“Haymitch Abernathy!”
Haymitch groans at the ear-splitting shriek of Effie fucking Trinket’s voice, rolling over in bed.
Effie proceeds to slam open his door a moment later, and Haymitch shoots up, gaping at the woman. Apparently she’s fucking strong. Who knew?
Effie shoots him a furious look, looking the angriest Haymitch has ever seen her look, and raises her left hand, her eyes smouldering.
Haymitch sees a whiskey bottle. Good to know that Effie got some sort of stick-and-poke tattoo after getting blasted. Haymitch didn’t know the damn woman had it in her.
It takes him maybe three or four seconds after that to realise that there’s an epiphany in his chest. Haymitch jolts up, clenching his sheets until his hands are white-knuckled, his eyes going wide as it finally dawns on him. That big moment erupts in his mind, and Haymitch very suddenly realises just why he’s all fucked up.
That whiskey bottle is a soulmark.
Oh, absolutely fucking not. No way in goddamn hell is this happening to him.

She had never been so overwhelmed with panic, with fear. Johanna had never felt so much like she was being hunted.

Johanna reaches out. Takes his hand in her own. Finnick's mind calms slightly, and so does her's. Johanna stares up at the ceiling, closing her eyes after a moment. The ocean roars in her chest. Floods her mind. She can feel the spray of the water, the taste of seasalt in the air. Johanna can feel the sand underneath of her feet, she hears laughter. Feels the sun. It's her go-to scene in moments like these.
Johanna has realised that she is always reaching out for Finnick Odair. That her natural instinct is to tune into him, to feel, to listen, to see his perspective. It's comforting, a sort of safety and assurance that she never necessarily had before. Not like this.
Finnick says he does the same thing. With her and with Annie.
Johanna reaches out for him, for his thoughts, and finds that she can hear the meadowlarks singing. That the sky is grey with wispy clouds, that the taste of pine hangs heavy in the air.
How telling of them both. Conjuring up an image to be comforting for the other, only to reach out and find their own memories looking back at them.

He remembers the first time he swam.
God, was it beautiful.
No one in District 4 remembers their first steps, Finnick is certain. He doesn’t even remember his little sister’s first steps. Ophelia was just as bad as him when it came to the ocean, when it came to being awestruck by it all.
Finnick wasn’t a very good influence on her — he encouraged her to sneak out at night with him. To dive into the water, to laugh under the moon. She’d tackle him into the water and he’d let himself sink as far as he could, pulling her down with him until he’d drag both of them back to the surface. They’d both be laughing, giggling, trying to dunk each other, trying to go under again, trying to touch the bottom.
Trying to reach out for something they could never begin to hope to reach.

“On the island,” Johanna breathes out. “You got her and Peeta?”
“He’s drowning right now,” Finnick grins, tossing his head to the side. “But yeah, I got them. Duck.”
Johanna does, and Finnick leaps over her, and Johanna hears someone falling into the water.
No cannon this time.
Johanna sighs, spinning around to block a Victor’s sword with her axe. Finnick rushes to kick him in the side, which sends him tumbling into the water.
“Okay,” Johanna sighs again, giving him a look. “I gotta go.”
“I know, so do I,” Finnick sighs back. Johanna gives him a very quick one-armed hug, nodding at him. “Okay. Go. I’ll get them.”
“I’ll see you in a bit, Finnick,” Johanna confirms. “Stay alive.”
Finnick grins at her. “You know I will. You too.”
“Always.”
