The plan itself, once it’s finally in place, is simple.
Grindelwald is holding a recruitment meeting in a remote hamlet deep in the forests of Latvia. They’d received the tip from an undercover auror a few weeks ago. Dan was happy. He had just enough to be satisfied with his life. He had a good job that payed well. He went to therapy. He had a hot and older boyfriend who was cooler than him and could make him laugh. He had a good enough relationship with his family. He even had friends.
So he didn't really feel the need to reminisce about the time he used to hook up with his best friend, back when he was a repressed emo boy at university, and got so overwhelmed by his own feelings that he ruined everything. He ruined their friendship, and anything else that could've happen from there.
So no, he won't let his surprising encounter with Phil unearth the feelings he tried his very best to bury deep down, more than a decade ago.

Summary
Phil’s life fell apart five years ago.
In the time since, he’s put significant effort into building a stable foundation for his survival, balancing his affliction and a career he never would’ve foreseen for himself with his own moral standing hanging somewhere in the midst. The stability of his precariously stacked castle of cards is unfortunately threatened, however, when a series of mysterious and logically inconsistent murders begin to plague London.
Phil’s job is simply to clean up after the deed has been done. He isn’t supposed to get involved in any way beyond that, but he cannot help his concern when these cases begin to implicate him and his safety in ways he wasn’t prepared to handle. People have begun taking notice of the Restless, and Phil can only hope that, at the end of the night, the spotlight won’t be left shining on him alone.
