But when Jee laughs at him trying to get his tongue to touch his nose, and Mara loops one of her arms through his to keep him from tossing the rest of his cup in the garbage, Eddie feels solid again.
Maybe he likes yellow birthday cake ice cream after all.

Summary
She thinks, sometimes, about just asking him. She and Joel talk about pretty much anything between them. Hell, he even talked her down through the bathroom door when she got her first period after arriving back in Jackson and was convinced she was dying because there was so much blood. A man who can talk about uterine lining and cycles and heavy flows without being a little bitch about it is a man who can talk about almost anything.
And yet, every single time she starts to open her mouth, she just hears his voice from the one time he did tell her exactly what they are.
Or well, what they aren’t.
You aren’t my daughter, and I sure as hell ain’t your dad.

But then he wiped it away and refocused on the road ahead of them, a long brown ribbon unspooling over the gently rolling hills. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Ellie. You know that, right?”
“Yup. Thought that was already established, given I trusted you to watch my back during the clicker swarm, but—” She shrugged. “You got me this far. I trust you’ll get me even farther.”

So busy badly sneaking bites of cheesy potato off of Joel’s plate (after he’d already offered them up wholesale, not understanding that theft makes them tastier), she largely tunes out what Tommy and two of the other lead patrollers are discussing. Training patrols don’t start until 16, and no amount of whining, threats, or attempts at sneaking into groups has borne fruit to change that, so it’s not like it’s immediately relevant to her since she already knows all of Joel’s routes before he goes on them.
And then one of the women says “Silver Lake” and it’s like all of the air has been sucked out of the room.

Summary
Tommy had expected, from what he had seen and heard of Ellie so far, that she’d be a chatty little thing, talking his ear off. Joel had made it sound like that’s what their entire trip had been, non-stop questions and puns.
But she just sits behind him on the horse, arms loosely wrapped around him, not saying a word. The few brief attempts he’d made at conversation had been met with one-word answers or silence.
He hadn’t missed the way she kept looking over her shoulder as they rode through and then out of Jackson, as if waiting for Joel to catch up to them and tell them he’d changed his mind. It wasn’t until they were a few miles out from the gates that he stopped feeling her move, that she slumped against him just a little as if giving up.
(or, Tommy is the one to leave Jackson with Ellie) (it goes only marginally better)

When Joel calls his name and comes jogging towards him in Jackson, pulling him into a hug as fierce, as joyful as the ones he got when he was back on leave during his army days, he thinks, Is that all it took? I just needed to leave him alone to let him heal? I could’ve just fucking ditched him and then gone back? It’s a painful thought, that his own attempt at support just hindered Joel’s healing, but it’s a giddy one, too, the idea of his brother back with him.
Then he sees Joel catch a kid who almost falls off of her horse when she dismounts, the motion as easy and thoughtless as if he were-
Oh, he thinks, when he sees the way the girl looks at Joel, all sass and no regard, clearly not afraid of him in the slightest, the way she uses his personal space as her own without a second thought. Oh, you paternal fucker.

“Meet Tara, our latest resident,” he says to them before turning to the woman. “This is my brother, Joel, and my niece, Ellie,” he says, and her already-limited reserve of politeness is lost for a moment behind the way she feels mildly stunned by her casual inclusion as his niece in the introduction.
Thankfully, adults tend to look only at adults first, so she has a moment to recover before-
-but no, Tara is looking at her, only at her, with an intensity that makes her feel uneasy. Immediately she presses a bit tighter to Joel, who looks down at her before looking back up to Tara, frowning a bit. He shifts Ellie a bit, getting her just slightly more behind him before he extends his hand, breaking Tara’s unnerving stare with a blink as she registers it in her field of vision.
“A pleasure,” he says, and Tara fumbles for a moment before she takes it, even as her gaze flits back to Ellie briefly.
