    "Why are you not scared?"

"I am scared," Ilya admits. "I just am tired. Of hiding me. Of hiding you. Of hiding how much I love you. I want to go to the rink— how do you say it? Authenti."

    "Authentically," Shane supplies, automatically.

"Yes. Authentically. I want to go to the rink authentically, as me," Ilya confirms.

Ilya looks at Shane, pauses until Shane meets his eyes. "I want to say: I, Ilya Rozanov love a man, and that man's name is Shane Hollander."

    Summary

This may not sounds like a happy story— but we don't believe in sad endings around here. This is a beautifully happy story born from tragedy, the way real life often is.

This fic is an alternate ending (major character death) to Built to Break. It begins in Chapter 18, in the OR, when surgeons discover Shane’s Ewing sarcoma cannot be fully removed. Clean margins aren’t possible, and the goal shifts from cure to comfort. If you’ve read Built to Break, you can start at Chapter 18. It also works as a standalone—though rereading from Chapter 1, knowing how it ends, might hit a little harder in the gut.

What follows is the story of his final year— intentional, painful, and deeply beautiful—and the love that carries him through it. But this story does not end when Shane does. It continues through the aftermath: the firsts, the grief, the anger, and the slow, stubborn choice to keep living a life he would be proud of. It’s about chosen family, about carrying someone forward, and about believing that love doesn’t end here on earth.

    Summary

After The Quiet Fight, the battle was supposed to be over.

Ilya survived cancer. He made it back to the NHL. He finished his first season back on the ice. From the outside, it looks like a victory.

    But survival doesn’t mean peace.

This sequel picks up in the aftermath—when the adrenaline fades and the real cost begins to surface. Ilya is fighting a body that still hasn’t fully forgiven him. Shane is fighting a mind shaped by months of fear, hospitals, and the constant threat of loss. And together, they’re fighting each other—trying to love, plan a future, and breathe again while remission looms quietly in the background.

This is a story about what comes after the battle, when Shane and Ilya are learning how to live when they are no longer in crisis—but not free from it either. A story about the tension between gratitude and grief, strength and fragility, love and resentment.

The fight feels louder than ever.
