Her face betrayed her nervousness. She hadn’t missed a beat a minute ago, taking down the suspect just seconds before she had pushed the plunger, with no hesitation in her eyes. Now her voice wavered and her eyes darted around as she spoke. He knew that it was ridiculously difficult to do nothing but wait.
He knew what he was going to say. Stay in T.O. mode. Tell her that it’s standard procedure. Instead, his eyes softened.
“For what? Doing my job?”
As he walks off, down the brightly lit hospital corridor, he thinks about his actions. He had smiled at her, to attempt to reassure her before he left. He showed her a lot more compassion than he had anyone for a long time. He wasn’t 100% sure where that fit in his job description.
