They’re halfway across the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, under the indigo blanket of twilight, when Raph realizes Casey has been very quiet.
As a matter of fact, he hasn’t heard Casey say a word since the kid was crying on the comms, begging Leo not to go away.
He glances over his shoulder at the back row of seats. Casey is sitting on April’s other side, hunched forward, arms wrapped around himself as if he’s staving off the cold. His eyes are glassy and freshly traumatized and Raph realizes he’s let something pretty important slip.

“Jesus,” Donnie mutters, rubbing his forehead. He’s already so fed-up with Mikey after like three seconds of conversation that Mikey can feel his eyes start to sting. “The last thing I want to do is fight with you, Mike. I thought you liked Cowabunga Carl.”
It’s not fair. Donnie’s so smart. He’s tired and overworked and unhappy, but he’s smart. How can he get this one thing so wrong? How can he not know Mikey as well as he used to, like all of those years of being each other’s best friends and co-conspirators and secret-keepers from where they were relegated to the “B Team” aren’t as intrinsic and important and fundamental to him as they are to Mikey? How can he look at Mikey, right in the face, and not understand him at all?
Something breaks.

“Hiijiji said our family is made of heroes,” Raphael says brightly. “So I’ll be one, too! And I’ll protect Leo and Donnie and Mikey when the bad guy comes.”
Yoshi can’t even speak for a moment. He has to wrestle with the lump in his throat for long enough that Raphael gets distracted and starts pawing at his hair.
His kids are so good. He can’t get over it. They were created to be super-soldiers, but all Yoshi sees are little goofballs with big colorful personalities and hearts made of solid gold.
When he’s pretty sure he can do it without a wobble in his voice, Yoshi declares, “There better be room for me in all these plans. I’m a hero, too, you know—you’ve seen me on TV!”
Hamato Yoshi escapes from Draxum’s lab without mutating. This changes things by a lot.

Donnie calls it a temporal differential. Leo’s third day back was spent being gently interrogated within an inch of his life. For every answer he gave, Donnie’s face got a little darker.
He seems a lot older than the last time Leo saw him. Everyone does. They all look at Leo like he’ll disappear into thin air if they blink too many times.

Mikey will never forget those horrible minutes after the portal closed, after Leo’s comms went dead, when he had wondered if he would ever hear his brother’s voice again. When he wondered what, exactly, his last words to Leo had been—they almost certainly weren’t I love you or please don’t leave so they didn’t count.
To make up for it, he wanted to tell Leo everything every chance he got. He wanted to make him laugh all the time. He wanted to crowd into the little twin-size infirmary bed to watch movies or do art projects that got glitter everywhere. He wanted to sneak out for smoothies even though it would get them in big trouble, because that was literally why he helped save the world in the first place.

“Michelangelo?”
Mikey’s head snaps up like a rubber band, so fast it hurts his neck. His father is standing in the doorway, whole and unharmed and strong. He tilts his head, taking in the probably dumb way Mikey is just standing there staring up at him.
He’s alive. In this moment, in this memory, he’s alive. But just a minute ago he was dying, he was choking on blood and then he was gone, and no matter how many times Mikey cried for him he didn’t come back.
Mikey’s chest feels like it’s closing around all his squishy insides like a fist. It’s really hard to breathe in a way that isn’t just desperate gulping gasps for air, so he holds his breath. It’s a good and useful thing that aquatic turtles can do it for a long time.
“I thought you and your brothers had left already,” the rat says mildly.
“We did? I mean, uh, yeah, we did,” Mikey says. He watches Splinter’s expression tighten in tiny inscrutable ways, and knows he didn’t do a very good job of sounding normal. So he clears his throat and finds a lopsided smile and tries again. “I just had to come back for something.”

So… him and his brothers aren’t… really brothers.
He takes a sobering breath. Okay. So what? He’d always kinda ping ponged that theory around in his head for years.
What were the chances that a bunch of pet store turtles really came from the same nest? It wasn’t like they were ever wild animals, rescued and raised. No. They were bred specifically for little boys' bedroom decoration, a novelty purchase where the excitement of having a new animal to feed and look after would have worn off in a matter of days, and the responsibility of keeping them alive would fall upon a rather reluctant mother, if that.
Donnie knew that. He knew that turtles often came from larger nests than just four, and so he’d always toyed with the idea that they probably had other siblings out there, the non mutated kind, probably living out that same little boy bedroom life right now, if not already buried in a shoebox somewhere next to the old family cat.
But having the evidence presented to him like this, right in the open on his desk, so real and vivid.
It feels wrong.
