This is a Xander/Spike fic, which began as a series of musing posts on Anna's LJ and finally developed into this long masterpiece of a story. It's set post-show; Xander is dispatched from Sunnydale by Willow to persuade Spike to come back and help out on the Hellmouth. Spike's now living in New York, and he's changed. And so has Xander. And this story is how they change a hell of a lot more.

Los Angeles was eighteen million degrees, weeks too early for it. Tony was sweating. It was good, it was his city, he loved it, he was basically part of it, but—on days like this, if he couldn’t be positioned directly in front of, and behind, and to the side of, air conditioning units, or at least fans, then there just wasn’t much point, was there, in existing in a corporeal three-dimensional form. The sun was beating down without mercy on the concrete and Tony folded his arms.
“I don’t know what we’re even doing here,” he whined to Pepper, who smiled at him with the arch patience of a saint. She was wearing linen. It was uncreased. Unwrinkled. She wasn’t sweating through it—or at all. It was uncanny.
“You’ll live, Tony,” she said.

Tony was halfway through the aisle, rapidly scanning the shelves with focused attention, when the voice intruded on his awareness.
“—can’t fucking believe you,” a man was saying with a low, gritty intensity into the phone. “You save me once and I’m stuck doing favors for you forever? Is that how this works?”
Tony didn’t deviate from the search pattern, but distantly noted that it was a nice-sounding voice, despite the speech content. Besides, his hand was clenched around the eighth Gingerbread Latte of the afternoon, and it had passed the resting tremor stage about an hour ago, so he was maybe not in the best position to be passing judgment on the lives of strangers.
