Olive shrugged. "I guess it feels like there's no right answer. If I decide to go for a faculty job, it will probably mean moving, and I'll be asking you to give up everything you've built at Stanford. But if I pass, I worry I'll regret the missed opportunity to build something of my own. It just feels like either way, one of us is going to end up unhappy. And that stresses me out."

Adam paused, then ventured, "And... do you remember what Holden said, when we told him we were planning to move up to SF?" Olive was surprised to hear something tentative and uncertain in Adam's voice, and she tilted her head back to look at him.
"He joked that you were going to be seen as even more of a flight risk than before, because now everyone will know you're going to follow me wherever I go. And then he said we might as well just make it official and get married, and you said..." she trailed off, suddenly realizing where this conversation was going. Her heart stuttered, and she let out the rest of the sentence in a single hushed breath. "You said you were waiting to ask until after I graduated."

Adam's felt his brain skitter to a halt, and it was as if the room had gone silent around him.
Olive. Had a huge crush on him? Olive, the woman he'd been obsessing over for three years? If she… had a thing for him, and he had a thing for her… did it mean that it didn't need to be fake? That… she might not be repulsed if he kissed her, really kissed her?
