He appraises the boy standing a few steps away from him. Broad and mighty back facing him, the sharpness of his shoulders with the dip between the wings. It’s not once or twice that Yohei longs to lean his head on that space, arms encompassing Hanamichi’s waist in a loose hold, as his mouth unconsciously shapes the melody of a long time ago lullaby, pressing a butterfly kiss as a charm to the fragile bone.
To understand Hanamichi’s tenacity and fierceness, yet to love him even more for that, Yohei is filled with gentle emotions and love so great that he doesn’t know what to do with them except to treat Hanamichi as the most precious person for his whole life.
Yohei has years of love accumulated and carefully tended for Hanamichi in obscurity like stars on a cloudy night; he has accepted it as a fact that he will love from the shadows. It never occurs to him stars live for billions of years and they will call for each other in the vast universe.

Miyagi can count the times when he almost caught a heart attack on the fingers of a single hand. When Aya-chan told him he’s about to become the number one point guard, when Mitsui showed up at basketball practice to beat him up, but most importantly - when Hanamichi, apparently begging to get killed, slapped Rukawa’s ass right before another match. Miyagi stopped dead in his tracks, ready to call the ambulance that very moment, when Rukawa turned his head to Hanamichi and… did nothing. “What the fuck?..”
Or, 4 times Miyagi witnesses Rukawa and Sakuragi being weirdly civil with each other, and 1 time it finally clicks why.

A spinal injury didn’t stop Hanamichi from playing basketball. His dad dying in front of him didn’t stop him from picking more fights. Countless rejections hadn’t stopped him from unthinkingly asking practically every girl in middle school out. It was frustrating, that this would be the thing that wore him down. He hadn’t known, exactly, how deeply this particular fear sank its roots. Only that it had been impressed upon him for as long as he could recall that something like this would imperil his life in a way that would ruin it beyond repair.
