“I have bad feeling about this.”
The two men looked up at the two-story suburban Ottawa house. Strings of multicoloured lights twirled around the squat, snow-covered cedar trees in the front yard, and a little cobblestone walkway curved up from the driveway toward the porch.
Shane looked over his shoulder and grinned. “You’re scared of my parents now?”
Ilya raised one dubious eyebrow. “Is not just your parents inside. Also there are aunts. Uncles.” He shuddered dramatically. “You should not have told me about Great Aunt Alice.”
Shane laughed. “It’s fine. Just ignore everything she says, and the rest are all gonna love you.” He leaned up on his tiptoes and kissed Ilya’s rough-stubbled cheek. “Just like I do.”
“Like you do?” Ilya wiggled his eyebrows up and down, and Shane saw the start of a mischievous grin twinkling in his eyes. “This will make this party much more interesting.”

“So,” Shane said, after another minute. “Welcome to Montreal.”
Ilya just started laughing, his body shaking against Shane’s.
“Do not tell me you prepare for all your home games this way,” he said.
“I shouldn’t have prepared for any home games this way,” Shane said, glancing at the clock by the bed. He should go, but he couldn’t make himself.
There's a year between the ending and the epilogue of Heated Rivalry. This is it.

Summary
They’re getting into a rhythm now, though, and Shane can see it. He can see this team winning the Cup this year. He tries not to get ahead of himself, tries to stay focused and go game by game, reminds himself that building up a team takes time and several seasons, but god. He wants this legacy: for himself, for Ottawa, for Ilya. For both of them and everyone else.
Which is why, goddamnit, now is not the time to crash out over fantasies of Ilya working his whole hand down to the wrist into Shane’s ass and fucking him on his fist. And yet. Shane should know by now that timing and “good ideas” are rarely factors in whether or not he gets obsessed with something.

Ilya’s ears rang, the air suddenly very heavy and suffocating. Because that wasn’t the voice Shane used to address Ilya with. Those weren’t the soft eyes Shane used to look at Ilya with. That wasn’t the body language Shane used to welcome Ilya with. Yet right now, Shane’s voice was filled with confusion and distance, his pretty-doe eyes full of wariness and his body tense.

Swallowing down bile, he asks, "How long did I take to get up?"

Ilya barely manages to swerve in time to avoid turning the Hollander-Marleau collision into a three-man pileup. He watches as Marleau stands up and apologizes to Shane — Ilya has no idea if it was a clean hit, but from Marleau’s face, he’s pretty sure it was accidental. And then Ilya waits for Shane to get up.
He doesn’t move.
Marleau glances at him as Ilya skates up to Shane, putting a hand on his shoulder as he says, “Hollander?” When he gets no response, he says it again, this time louder and with a steadily rising sense of dread. “Hollander, come on, get up.”

“You’re pride is fine,” Shane griped out of habit and then had nuzzled closer, held Ilya tighter because he hated that he could make Ilya feel that way. “I’m sorry. I know I do it. It’s hard for me after so long. I love you so much, it scares me shitless sometimes.”
Shane's working on letting go of the control that's kept him and Ilya safe for the past ten years. The fact that he's Shane Hollander means that he's got a plan. The fact that he's with Ilya Rozanov means that plan involves fucking him stupid. And for once, Shane's kind of ready to be the one who drives Ilya out of his mind.
