Before, when Bucky had only just hacked off his pigtails over the sink, he turned to Steve with red-rimmed eyes and put on his cockiest grin. “How’s it look?” he’d asked, smoothing back his hair with one hand, the other perched on his hip.
Steve had looked him over, a smile hiding in the corners of his mouth, and murmured, “You’ll do,” while he reached up and tucked a curl back into place.
Bucky hadn’t known, then, why that made him ache. But he figured it out eventually.

It stares at him for a long, silent second before lowering itself again. Palms touch the floor. It moves forward slowly until it reaches him. Like a trained pet, it stops in front of him. Alexander watches, a flicker of satisfaction tightening his jaw as he lifts his hand and holds out his palm toward it.

Honestly, if he thinks about it, Bucky kind of does want to know what’s in the void. Especially if the void has like, five fucking minutes of peace and quiet. Not to mention Yelena’s wit is just about the only thing this odd group has going for them. She’s whip-smart, and kind, and self-sacrificing, and if Bucky thinks too long about that combination and what city they’re in he’s going to put his fist through Walker’s ugly-ass shield.
When Bucky opens his eyes, Ava and Walker are staring at him like he knows what to do. Why am I in charge? He throws up his hands. “Fine,” he mutters, feeling for the knives at his back. Surely the void won't evoke any life-changing emotions. Right?

Meanwhile, there's a whole different kind of danger at home. Bucky knows Steve loves him, and he can't ever admit that he loves Steve right back. Because Steve would never hide who he is, and being a fairy is even more perilous than being a union organizer.
When management hires some goons to break up a union rally, sure enough, Steve gets clobbered. Bucky takes care of him, like always, and it leads to a near-confession Bucky narrowly escapes. Sam’s smile didn’t fall, but it became a little smaller. He glanced at the shield propped up beside him; all red, white, and blue, stars and stripes. “I don’t really… I’ve got a lot going on,” he said.*
1943. Bucky Barnes has recently shipped out, when he suddenly finds himself transported to a future where his current best friend is gone, he is (somehow) still alive, and the handsome man who found him can't quite look at him without heartbreak in his eyes.

It transformed from the cape of the strongest man on the planet into an infant's swaddle; a relic of a dead world, a soft token of a mother's love that was strong enough to keep her baby safe thirty-three years later. Bruce hadn't cried in almost eighteen years, but tonight, he was about to break that streak.
