Summary
May can’t help keep looking at her phone is the thing. Looking at the text message. The last text message. So normal she hadn’t thought anything of it and now it’s always going to be the last text message. The one she didn’t reply to in time because she was at a study group thinking about fucking calculus and she didn’t know-
I love you. I’m so proud of you.

Summary
“I- I got struck by lightning recently so I’ve been sort of taking stock, I guess. Because everyone’s sort of looking at me now, like I have some sort of answer. Or could find some sort of meaning in it. And I haven’t. And- Sorry that was probably too much to dump on a stranger.” He’s got used to ignoring the way the look on people’s faces change when he says the lightning thing, still he almost flinches from the way her laugh drops off in her throat, smile sliding away and eyes softening.
“Near death experience and your first worry was if you’d left a trail of unsatisfied women behind you?”
“Something like that.”
“I mean, I might be way off base because I’ve spent like a total of two hours with you and for most of that we weren’t talking exactly. But I don’t think you’re gonna find your answers in calling ex hookups.” She pauses, biting her lip in a way that’s more nervous than anything else. “Did you sort it out with that guy you were seeing?”
“Sorry, what?”

Summary
When he told it to Fig, he would say he wasn’t sure how he’d ended up on a date with Sam Nightingale. You don’t go on dates, she replied. He pretended like it didn’t sting as much as it did.
He didn’t go on dates because of her, is the thing he almost spit out.

Summary
They were a party. A team. A cleric's job was to be helpful. She liked helping Kipperlilly. No more than she liked helping any of them, she told herself. She used to believe it. She was good at belief. At the type of faith that seemed unappealing to other people. So she told herself she liked helping her just as much as she liked helping any of them.
It was a cleric’s job to be helpful. She liked helping her as much as she liked helping any of them. Another hairpin just in case.

Summary
Ayda, the second great love of her life, knows her in fragments. She has seen pictures of her as a kid, a chunky little baby leaving a patch of drool on Gilear’s shirt. And she met the ghost of her at twenty one and slowly they built a life where she could breathe again. But her teenage years are a black hole, a sucking wound. Ayda has seen the puckered scar on her shoulder, has seen her retching through a panic attack. But Fig has done everything she possibly can to not let herself get sucked in the tangled mass of that night, and that means snipping it out of her own history like film from a reel.
No amount of gentleness can pull her from the way her world is splitting all over again, moving through memories she tries not to think about like she’s just another flickering ghost in a haunted house. Every day she carries her dead friends with her but normally it’s just Adaine’s laugh on the breeze or the smell of the ink Riz used to fill his pens with but here kneeling on the floor of her apartment they are stood with her bleeding and unblinking.
It’s just so fucking unfair. She knows she manages to form those words as she starts to sob. They’re easy to say and she’s said them a million times.

“What the fuck was that,” Fabian says finally. The words rumble through his chest, and he’s still close enough behind her that Adaine can feel it too. “Was that the Ni—”
“Don’t say it!” Kristen yelps. “Don’t say it, what the fuck was that?”
(In which the Night Yorb is comin' for us, and Adaine's... dealing with it. It'd be easier to deal with if Riz would wake up.)

Summary
At Jacobs, they call it the hangover. Classes didn’t teach about it so they had to make their own language. Obviously kids with the Touch as their primary get it the worst, but the rest of them aren’t immune. One particularly rough case, one too many moments of overexertion, and you’d be taking some of the ghost back home with you.
(or: Three times the trio takes care of their own.)

“I do,” she says.
